Iran has backed out of a UN-backed deal to enrich uranium abroad with the help of Russia and other countries, according to a senior Iranian lawmaker quoted in Iranian media. Alaeddin Boroujerdi, the chief of Iran's Parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, was quoted by the Iranian Students News Agency on Saturday as saying, "Giving the 3.5 percent enriched uranium to receive 20 percent enriched fuel for Tehran's research reactor whether gradually or all at once is called off."

Boroujerdi added that Iran's ambassador the UN nuclear watchdog, Ali Asghar Soltanieh, was currently "in talks to find an approach for the issue."

The plan is backed by the US, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany.
