In the American military our hair had to be no longer than the bottom of the shirt collar, so we wore it up. I'm assuming that besides looking neater, it also was a safety issue (won't get caught in equipment, or give the enemy something to grab onto).

During all the years of my service I've never met a christian arab in the IDF (though naturally I met a lot of Druzes and even served in the same unit with a muslim for some time). Do you know how many arab christians actually enlist?
