HAMBURG - Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said Saturday that the IDF assassination of Hamas leader Salah Shehada's house in Gaza overnight Monday was a "100 percent mistake."

"Yes it was a miscalculation, one hundred percent a mistake. The outcome shows clearly we used the wrong weapon. The bomb caused more harm than good," Peres told the German news magazine Der Spiegel, in an interview released ahead of publication on Saturday.

[...]

Peres went on to say that he has "doubts" about Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's commitment to peace in the Mideast

The interview with Der Spiegel, due to hit newsstands Monday, quoted the architect of the Oslo accords as saying he is not certain Sharon can be considered a partner for peace any longer. Are the two last paragraphs a joke or is Mr. Peres not the acting Israeli Foreign Minister anymore? Israel must be the only country in the world where a person in Peres' position can make such statements towards the foreign press without losing his job on the spot.

So why blame the "Europeans"? They are honestly participating in the next Israeli election campaign, just as they have been asked to do by the topmost Israeli representative...

It couldn't have been a more suitable magazine either, of course:
COMMUNIQUE: 24 December 2001

Vile Hitler Comparison

The publisher of the most prestigious German weekly compares Ariel Sharon to Adolf Hitler.

Dear HonestReporting Member,

"Der Spiegel," the most prestigious German weekly, has published an article, "Arafat Knows Tunis Already," which compares Ariel Sharon to Adolf Hitler. The article is written by Rudolf Augstein, a publisher of Der Spiegel and a prominent figure in German journalism over the past few decades.

http://www.honestreporting.com/Critiques/2001/96_german.asp One more thing I don't really understand - unless Shimon Peres wants to become another Uri Avnery. The latter is a former classmate and apparently a friend of Rudolf Augstein, the founder of "Der Spiegel", btw. As discussed in a different thread, Avigdor Lieberman may be uninformed and misguided in his European "exploits", but this can hardly apply to Peres

P.S.: From the Ha'aretz Newsticker:

Israel suspends embassy employee in Ireland who publicly slammed raid on Gaza Strip last weekCan the fact that it did get the guy in trouble represent some progress? Is there actually such a thing as trained diplomats in Israel, btw.?

everyone needs to be committed to peace ! unless peace is central to your root - how can it be central to the nations root !

Here is a rather dramatic (and due to the political background of the author obviously slanted in respect to "local" comparisons) comment on the Irish embassy employee, apparently not an Israeli:

Still, a point the author misses - isn't there anyone to check the people they employ properly???
