STRASBOURG (EJP)---The European Parliament in Strasbourg, which this week debated the conflict in Gaza, heard the testimony of 10-year-old Yossi Haimov from Sderot who was wounded by a rocket launched on the southern Israeli city.
Despite the Qassam shrapnel that was lodged in his shoulder, the blood around him and the incredible pain, he maintained incomprehensible restraint, he explained a hearing organized on Wednesday by European Friends of Israel (EFI), a pro-Israel European lobby.
The young boy had to protect his sister who was with him.
Drawing on incredible strength and chocking back on his tears, Yossi kept the pain inside him. A little boy who a minute earlier was trying to have fun like all of the children around the world had to face a new and harsh reality.
“This testimony attempted to showthat there is more than one truth when speaking about civilian casualties and suffering. It is a reality which sorrowfully the media throughout the last years has ignored, that Israeli cities have been targeted and hit for the last eight years, leaving hundreds of thousands of Israeli citizens living under constant fear,†EFI said.
During the hearing, Nickolay Mladenov, a Bulgarian Christian-Democrat MEP, reported on his recent trip to Israel and the West Bank. "A war is lost or won in function of the graphic pictures you show,†he said.
He remembered the Fatah soldier, whom he met last week, shot in his legs by Hamas militiamen, who received treatment in Tel Hashomer Hospital by Israeli physicians.
Mladenov said that he would have liked to speak with Gazan children and stressed how Hamas has imposed a dictatorship and uses children and other civilians as human shields.
Dany Gilerman, a former Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, stressed that Israel “is not in war against the Palestinian population but with Hamas,†explaining that the Israeli army invested a lot of resources, technologies and techniques to avoid civilian casualties.
"Every dead Palestinian child is a terrible mistake. For Hamas, every dead Israeli child is a victory,†Gilerman said.
He said that hundreds of trucks with humanitarian aid passed into Gaza and that the Israeli army has built multiple mobile hospitals at the border of Gaza for the Palestinian victims.
A representative of the Palestinian Delegation to the EU, who attended the hearing, said he hopes that “a Palestinian victim is equal to an Israeli victim.â€
“If Israel wants to survive in the region, it needs absolute peace,†Majed Bamya said.
Colette Avital, a Labour member of the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, stated that Israel could not avoid war. "It has been eight years that Israel is bombed by Qassam rockets".
