In the wake of the latest attacks on its troops, Israel once again needed to respond to the Islamic terrorism of Hamas by demolishing the homes from where the terrorists hid and planned their latest attack on Israel.

This action was taken to send a clear message to the Palestinian population that if they harbor terrorists in their homes, then they run the risk of losing those homes. It is also a response to Hamas, which mistakely has concluded that there is no consequence to its actions, other than to the militant members of its organization, which by and large, do not mind being killed as "martyrs" anyway.

But beyond the direct demolition of the terrorists hideouts, there was an additional response of demolishing the Palestinian airport runways. Why move against the airport, which was not a direct part of the terrorist operation this time? The answer is that the action was a matter of applying the "carrot and stick" approach to train the Palestinians to recognize that their terrorism is unacceptable.

Under this theory, when the PA begings to arrest Islamic terrorists, then Israel pull back its troops from PA territories, lifts travel restrictions, and allows Palestinians to work inside Israel. This part constitutes the carrot, i.e., the reward for abandoning terrorism.

On the other hand, when the Palestinians return to terrorism, then Israel reacts with the stick, which is what we see in this latest action of demolishing the Palestinian airport runway.

One would hope that sooner or later, the Palestinians will be able to make decisions about fighting terrorism that will finally bring rewards to their people. Otherwise, they can expect to pay the price for Arafat's alliance with the other Islamic mass murderers that infest Palestinian society and cause untold suffering for the the Palestinian people and for Israel.
