For the past 6 years, primarily under UN oversight, both the diplomatic focus and IAEA efforts have been to thwart the construction of a nuclear weapon by iran.
Even in today's news media, the UN continues to defend iran and try to obfuscate iranian lies, including those about how much uranium has been enriched:

"UN officials were dismissive of suggestions that "Iran could smuggle enriched uranium out of the Natanz plant for [further] processing at a secret location," the report added.
But Tanter challenged the UN dismissal, saying, "Contrary to explanations by the UN officials, the regime probably smuggled enriched uranium out of the Natanz plant for additional processing at a secret location, such as a military site called Lavizan-2 in the northeastern area of Teheran.
"Because Lavizan-2 is a military site, it is my understanding that it is not open to inspection. Buried deep in tunnels, the regime conducts covert enrichment activities at Lavizan-2, operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps [IRGC]," Tanter said."

As such, if iran, despite the best diplomatic efforts of the EU, US and others at the behest of the UN, is able to build a weapon, then I would begin the process of advocating that the UN can no longer serve as a useful tool in the world today.
This means that it would no longer be acceptable for US taxpayers to finance an organization who most basic mission of peace and diplomacy has utterly failed, and can no longer be justified.
Some have suggested a "League of Democracies," which given the level of anti-semitism exhibited by the upcoming Durban II conference might be worthwhile to consider. From the events related to iran, with 6 years of wasted, failed diplomacy, 3 flouted UNSC resolutions openly, it is clear that the major Western powers need to re-think whether the UN still has a place in 2009 and beyond, or if a revised international entity, including a balanced, non-politicized ICC and Human Rights committee, should be pursued.
What so many in the leftist Western mainstream media have not either realized, or realized and chosen not to discuss, is that the day iran conducts a nuclear weapons test, is truly the day where the UN can be realistically assumed to be extinct, if not in purpose then in function.
