Lib Dems urge ban on arms to Israel

From The Jewish Chronicle
Marcus Dysch
March 19, 2009

The Liberal Democrats have called for a suspension of British arms sales to Israel following the Gaza conflict.

In a wide-ranging motion proposed by MP Edward Davey, (Maven: who spoke at the sending if of George Galloway's 'Viva Palestina' convoy) the party’s foreign affairs spokesman, at it's spring conference in Harrogate, delegates also voted for the suspension of the update to Israel’s association agreement with the EU, which provides the basis for the country’s dealings in Europe.

Lib Dem Friends of Israel chairman Monroe Palmer said: “Restrictions on trade with Israel will not resolve any problems in the region whatsoever.

“We could have done without the motion on Gaza but I think the feeling within the party is reflective of elsewhere in the country; Israel needs its security, but people do not feel that has been enhanced by Gaza.”

(Amazingly Rabbi Julia Neuberger remains a representative of the party in the House of Lords despite it's increasing anti-Israel pronouncements.)

What type of weapons do the U.K. supply to Israel anyway either in part or in whole and who would be most hurt by such an embargo anyway, Israel or the U.K.?

No one listen to the LibDem's anyway. The House just jeers whenever the leader stands - even if he's actually got a good point. When they do make a good point or come up with a good idea, the other two just hike it, so overall, they never appear to have much credibility in anything other than economics. And no one is going to vote just on a Vince Cable ticket.

Since Nick Clegg took over the party I believe it has fared worse than in the past - the closest it came to being a tiny little threat was under Charles Kennedy (would such a statistic suggest that being an alcoholic smoker - a la Charlie - actually adds to your sense of sanity??)

I watched Clegg speak - his heart is actually good but his trust is, at best, immature. He is - as Thomas Sowell puts it - a would-be 'anointed one' - as are many of his party. Having read Sowell's book (The Vision of the Anointed; Self-congratualtion as a Basis for Social Policy), I tend to think these anointed people have created so much harm, extrapolating their own ideological principles across every situation. They should be prosecuted for politicking without due care and attention!

And of course.....the LibDem's do have a fairly high Muslim vote (Cyncial? Me?)

I personally find the existance of a party with no intention of coming to power but just slagging off the people who have to face up to the real decisions deeply immoral.

Good point.

Clegg shouldn't have got the leadership. He wouldn't have done either, had the postal strike and his refusal to allow for it, not gone in his favour.

I've heard Clegg speak - and I've heard Huhne. The difference is like watching a 6th former take on the Headmaster. Clegg is all 'anti-war-we-must-be-kind-'cos-we've-got-millions-of-victims-and -aren't -I-remarkable-to-give-speeches-without-using-notes-just-like-CallmeDave?'; whilst Huhne is more 'screw that - we can't scrap our military defences or allow thugs to roam unfettered'

On some points I do agree with the LibDems. I'm violently anti-ID cards, the DNA database and the surveillance/instrusion society. I'm also anti-big government and believe that local affairs should be dealt with by local communities. I don't agree with their pro-Europe stance or their inability to see where this country is heading.
