The EU president, from the Czech republic, threatening to go on a separate track from the EU on the issue of Israel.

Caretaker Czech prime minister and European Union president-in-office, Mirek Topolanek, has sharply criticised the European Commission for insisting Israel advance peace negotiations before upgrading EU-Israel relations. Mr Topolanek made the comments in an interview with Israeli centre-left daily Ha'aretz, published on Sunday (26 April), at the end of his visit to Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories.

JERUSALEM (AFP) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected on Thursday a call by French President Nicolas Sarkozy to free a Palestinian-French man jailed for plotting to kill a prominent rabbi, a government source said. "The prime minister decided to reject the demand for the release of this Palestinian," the official said, adding that the man "never expressed regret."
