British film director Ken Loach has threatened to withdraw his film Looking for Eric from the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) unless organisers withdraw Israel’s sponsorship of the event.

In a letter addressed to festival director Richard Moore, a keen supporter of Israeli films, Loach cited Israel’s “illegal occupation of Palestinian land, destruction of homes and livelihoods” and “the massacres in Gaza” as his reasons for boycotting the festival, which gets underway on July 24.

The letter was co-signed by the film’s writer Paul Laverty and producer Rebecca O’Brien.

Film festival boycott looms over Israeli sponsorship (http://jewishnews.net.au/2009/07/16/film-festival-boycott-looms-over-israeli-sponsorship/)

Right ... If boycotting is good enough for them then here is my pledge: I will boycott the boycotters. I will make it my business to avoid seeing ANY film with which any of the following people have ANY involvement:

Ken Loach
Paul Laverty
Rebecca O’Brien

I say: What's good for the goose is good for the gander ...

As one can see, it seems that birds of a feather stick together ... this trio seems to be involved with each other on quite a few films. And I hope that any person with a modicum of feeling of justice will avoid any involvement with such people who can only see wrong with Israel but have no problems with Arab racism, xenophobia, hatemongering, intolerance, violence and exploitation of others ..

WOW! Evidentally, I've been boycotting these idiots for years, since I've never seen one of the films on the list!

FWIW, I've never even heard of any of the films on the lists--the film festival organizers must be trembling with boycott threats coming from these big screen power brokers.

Yet the article in the reference link calls him "LEGENDARY British film director Ken Loach". You might note that I edited that bit out of my quote, I must admit that I couldn't stand even the idea of it ... :)

Having said that, I am with you, I haven't heard much of any of them or their past works. Maybe they ARE a bunch of has beens (I wish) ... in which case it was stupid of both the Jewish News and me to give them oxygen by talking about them ....?

Yet he did appear to have influence in at leat one occasion in the past ..

In May 2009, organizers of the Edinburgh International Film Festival have returned a grant from the Israeli Embassy after speaking with Ken Loach. The director proposed a boycott of the festival if the £300 grant, which was intended to enable Tali Shalom Ezer, a graduate of Tel Aviv University, to travel to Scotland for a screening of her film Surrogate, was accepted. In response, former Channel 4 chief executive Sir Jeremy Isaacs said: "Ken Loach has always been critical of censorship of his own work, albeit it was many years in the past. The idea that he should lend himself to the denial of a film-maker's right to show her work is absolutely appalling." Describing Loach's intervention as an act of censorship, he said: "They must not allow someone who has no real position, no rock to stand on, to interfere with their programming." Later, a spokesman for the EIFF said that although it had returned £300 to the Israeli Embassy, the festival itself would fund Ms. Shalom-Ezer's travel to Edinburgh out of its own budgetAnd like all people of his political inclination he posesses a healthy dose of hypocrisy and double standard ..

Ken Loache was a big deal with a certain crowd during the early 90's.
if I recall correctly, his films are all improved with really obnoxious working class characters sitting around whining in thick cockney accents. He inspired a wave of realist drama crap that was really tedious to watch. They were treated as dark comedy but I'm not sure they were entirely meant to be. This isn't the first time he's tried to get Israeli films banned.
