UK Faith schools criticised for Middle East bias
By Jessica Elgot.

Muslim schools are likely to use “inflammatory language” and bias when teaching pupils about the Middle East, an Ofsted report has found.

Inspectors visited 51 private faith schools to investigate the spiritual and cultural lessons that the schools provided. They found some schools displayed posters in favour of a certain religious or political group.

They also found that many of the schools used teaching materials which had incorrect information about other religions.

Schools minister Ed Balls ordered the report in March after concerns were raised about teaching standards at independent faith schools.

In the report, inspectors expressed concern over posters in a Muslim school which referred to the “Israeli occupation of Palestine”. They found the school had failed to teach the other side of the debate.

But do we really care? All sorts of sectarian schools preach all sorts of gabble. We do, we want schoolchildren to be exposed to all views, in that way they can distinguish between the absurd and the real. We live cheek by jowl in the UK and can't afford the levels of division the US can afford through it's greater land mass and more sparsly spread populations.
I am not comfortable that Muslim kids are being brought up to hate jews in Britain precicely because it then gets transformed into attacks on synagogues and schools. Something which never happens in the US at least for now, but is sadly common in the UK.

I'm sanguine on the point that somehow if you criminalize hate speech you will solve anything. Maybe you will. More likely you just legitimize the more affable and well crafted versions of it. Hence, Nick Griffin.

If you were in my house right now Medicrates you would be seeing hours long newschannel coverage of anti-Griffen protests outside the Beeb all afternoon as he is to be on 'Question Time' tonight.

Much as I despise the Griffin's BNP's hateful policies I absolutly stand by the need for free speech so that it can be countered, argued and defeated if it is wrong. But I cannot agree that hate speech should be taught in a school to children, hate speech like porn is strictly for adults in my book.

On the subject of Griffin I find the leftist so-called 'anti-fascists' now shouting outside the Beeb equally repulsive to the BNP. These are the same people who carried the "We Are All Hamas Now' posters during Gaza.

Right, but you aren't going to change anyone's mind either. I suppose it's possible but if kids are learning hate in school they're probably learning it at home too. Sometimes the most you can hope for with 'protest' is to get it on the record.

People get stupider when they are exposed to bigotry from a young age. Why else was racism so common 40 years ago but now is a very small minority. The difference is only cultural and educational. People with bigoted tendencies should not have a right to help poison a society that at least mostly does not have those tendencies. If they want to reap the benefits of an advanced country, those benefits come with obligations.
