Dueling petitions circulating at Columbia University
Columbia University’s president blasted a faculty-sponsored petition calling on the school to divest from companies that do business with Israel. “The petition alleges human rights abuses and compares Israel to South Africa at the time of apartheid, an analogy I believe is both grotesque and offensive,” Lee Bollinger said in a statement. “I want to state clearly that I will not lend any support to this proposal.” Bollinger’s statement comes as two opposing petitions are competing for the support of the Columbia community, according to The New York Jewish Week. One petition, which has gained about 400 signatures at its Web site, calls on Columbia to use its financial and political influence to lobby the U.S. government to suspend aid to Israel. However, a counter petition launched last week by pro-Israel forces has gained more than 5,000 signatures, the paper reported. Source: Jewish Telegraphic Agency (www.jta.org).

Final Update on the Anti-Divestment Campaign
from the Columbia and Barnard Faculty/Student Anti-Divestment Committee
Thank you for signing the anti-divestment petition. Our final tally was 33,258 signators, including 391 faculty; 1,602 students; 135 staff; 5,697 alumni; 1,767 parents; and 23,666 community members. (By contrast, the divestment campaign had 943 signatures, with 107 faculty, 372 students, and 464 others.)
This was an outstanding effort and, because of your support, our message was heard by the University - decisively.
On November 13 our petition was presented at a hearing held by the CU Trustee Committee on Socially Responsible Investing. The Committee is making a decision in December.
Would you like to receive an email about the final decision of our Trustees regarding divestment, and future follow-up actions?
If so, please let us know that you wish to be kept on our list (which will now be maintained by Columbia/Barnard Hillel).
YES -
I want to receive an email update about the Trustee response to the anti-divestment campaign;

Nice going everyone! Quick mobilazation of the Jewish people and their friends for the protection of the State of Israel and our ultimate survival reminds me of what I have learned of the early days of the IDF. I feel proud to be a Jew! Congrats
