View Full Version : Beirut horror fashion show

The photos are from September this year but I believe that they deserve to be preserved for the posterity.
The person depicted is a top Lebanese model Nathalie Fadlallah dispalying a dress designed by the Saudi (sic!) couturier Yahya al-Bushairy (the gentleman on one of the following pictures). The outfit is part of his spring 2003 collection, I wonder whether the streets of Beirut will bloom with this work of art next year

i eagerly await the pics I'm afraid they are pretty awful :(
The explanation runs as follows: the brown splotches are the blood of the Palestinian martyrs. The pictures are of Muqata with an (slightly comical, experts say) Israeli tank in front of it and of Mohammed al-Dura.
But since you have noticed it, tell me: is this kind of stuff more or less in line with the local taste (as opposed to political views)? Would a normal Lebanese woman ever consider to wear such a dress?

P.S.: since you are an expert ;) - I had to scale down the original high resolution photos b/c of the size limitations on this forum, so here is - may NewsGuy forgive me ;) - a compilation of the crucial details for better visibility:

But I'd recommend a good laundry service for the lady.

sadly ive seen this before and im sorry to disappoint but some of the saudi "designers'"catwalk shows i have attended back home in beirut have been much worse than this. much worse. the last time something like this was done there was a big outcry in the media about fashion and politics not mixing. the show was stormed- the dress that did it was a depiction of a baby from the Sabra and Chatila massacre whose head had been blown off, and Muhammed Al-Dorah calling on other kids to be 'martyrs'. sick.
and no a normal leb woman wouldnt wear this dress, come on (more lebanese women are into Zuhair Murad/ Yahya Bishriari/ Hayfa Wehbe/ Elie Saab).

yes, i had a look for them myself and found these exact same pics on www.hindustantimes.com and a couple other sites but not one was lebanese, they would never allow it. perhaps with an exception of lebs that are originally palestinians, but i still doubt it.

Do excuse me but this article is a couple of years old and I didn't see any new craze to wear this woman's 'chic' when I was in Beirut at that time. But anyhow.. I found this picture on middle-east-online.com.
The fashion statement is the work of US-educated Lebanese designer Loulwa Abdel Bakri.

Yes, I would agree that these are a bit more "pret a porter"!
How common are blond Lebanese women and has it been more risky to look so "Western" in Lebanon since Syria's presence? Sorry, I'm completely ignorant on this subject.

Maybe next years line will have burkha's with a built in self punishment device that can be remotely activated by the man in the house?
Geez......even the clothing designers are becoming radical.

Blondes are as common in Lebanon as they are in America,- my grandmother is blonde, so are a few of my aunties.
And yes, that's the best thing about Lebanon, when I go back I can do the same, dress the same, interact the same as I would here in the UK. Syria's presence makes no difference in this respect, its the same story for them- they look the same as Lebs (blondes, brunettes, blue eyes, green eyes, brown eyes- a mix that's not common at all with Arabs from the Gulf region) - and the fusion of Western and Eastern styles are present there too.- so they dont clash with us in Lebanon about that.
Syria likes to interfere with our politics and are certainly not welcome in that arena, but are most welcome to participate in our beauty pageants, as long as they make a swift journey home after :D

making political statements with fashion is not uncommon, but the past has shown it's not a wise thing to do -Lebanese American actress/model Yasmine Bleeth knows that more than anyone, she was shamed a few years ago. I'm surprised Ms.FadlAllah allowed herself to be used in this way too.

Yasmine is a name common to both Jews and Lebanese. Some people even think Yasmine is (part) Jewish. So you are sure she is Lebanese? Muslim, Marionite?
Also, please tell what she did if you can, I haven't heard and am too lazy to search for it, he he.

I know she's Lebanese but I dont know what religion she is. You may be thinking of Shannon Elizabeth (real name Fadal -who played Nadia, the sexy Czech student in 'American Pie') She's a mixture of Syrian and Lebanese, i believe she's muslim but has jewish blood somewhere in her family tree.
I cant really remember what Yasmine did exactly -i believe it was something similiar to Ms.FadlAllah, only she wasnt modelling anything, just attending a music festival -i know that at the time israeli troops were in south lebanon, and it was something about that
save me some of that fatoush!

It proves just how barbaric muslim countries are becoming, its not just the fashion designers who have to have a sick enough mind to come up with 'fashion' like that, but the organisers and the public have to watch and approve. Obvioulsy they do.
You wouldnt see a fashion parade in a western country with a model with a dress of the twin towers collapsing or a dress with Guantanamo Bay on it would you, i mean at a top New york fashion show.
Just proves muslim and different from jews and christians, thats all.

It's not the sick mind of Islam ... it's the sick mind of capitalism. If he wanted to make a political statement, why didn't he do it creatively? The dress looks like nothing more than a cheap T-shirt. It looks like he just whipped up something overnight and wanted to make a quick buck off it -- he wanted to turn a piece of polyester into a high-ticket item because of it's a political statement. If he wanted to do something real for a cause he really believed in, he should've spent the time to make some nice pieces and donate all the proceeds of sales to a cause.

Syrians, Palestians, Lebanese, and Hebrew Jews are genetically the same, so they are the same people with differnt religions.
The most commom look for all of them are not blonde hair and blue eyes, yeah there are alot, but the majority have pale skin and brown eyes, and blackish brown hair. Just like you I bet ayesha.

her mom is,
Yasmine Bleeth was born on June 14, 1968 in New York City, New York. She is the daughter of a French/North African (Algerian) model named Carina and a Russian/German photographer named Philip who runs a business that rents
vans to fashion photographers for on-location shoots. He now is Yasmine's business manager.
