'Israel willing to share its know-how with Africa'
03 April, 2003
Israel is keen to advance the good relations it has with Botswana to a higher level, the country's ambassador said on Monday.
"Bilateral relations between the two countries are friendly and warm," ambassador, Itzhak Gerberg said, adding that it is his country's intention to continue the trend and improve government to government relations.
Speaking at a ceremony to celebrate his country's 55th year of independence in Gaborone, Gerberg said Israel, as a modern and advanced democracy, is willing to share its know-how and experience with Africa in general and with Botswana in particular.
With regard to the Middle East situation, he said inspite of the uncertainty in the area, he believes Palestinians' terror attacks against Israeli will cease following the Iraq war and political reforms in the Palestinian Authority.
The reforms included the election of a new Prime Minister.
Under the Road Map initiated by the United States of America, he said, Israel will find the way for the renewal of the peace process in the region without compromising her national security.
In response, Assistant Minister of Presidential Affairs and Public Administration, Olifant Mfa stated categorically that Israelis and the Palestinians must realise that there is no alternative to the peace process.
"Botswana, strongly believes that the fulfilment of the letter and spirit of the Oslo Accords, and with it real improvement in the daily lives of Palestinians is still the best hope for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East." Mfa said Botswana believe in peace and that the destiny of the human family is one of harmony under the auspices of international law.
He said his country values and regards as essential the cooperation that exists between the two countries. BOPA
