Ohio State Alumni/ae Against Terrorism Demand that President Holbrook deny the use of the campus to the Palestinian Solidarity Movement, a group that supports terrorism.

To: President Holbrook

To: President Holbrook of Ohio State University

Ohio State Alumni/ae Against Terrorism demand that President Holbrook act immediately to deny the use of the Ohio State campus by the Palestinian Solidarity Movement, a group that supports terrorism.

We, the undersigned, alumni/ae of Ohio State University, are unwavering in our support of the constitutional right to freedom of speech and of the importance of the principle of academic freedom. We do not, however, believe that Ohio State has an obligation to host the meetings of any group that preaches race-hatred, endorses violence, and supports terror attacks on a peaceful, civilian population.

When a great University lends its campus to any group, it inevitably lends also some part of its prestige. The Ohio State administration may not intend to grant any degree of approval to the Palestinian Solidarity Movement, a group that espouses a program that is repugnant to decent people, yet the inevitable effect of allowing such a group to meet on the campus is that it gives the appearance of such approval. Allowing the Solidarity Movement to meet at Ohio State constitutes an endorsement of terrorism in effect, if not in intent.

Universities have long refused to allow the use of campus facilities by groups and speakers whose racist or violent ideas are so repugnant to the community of educated men and women that they go beyond the bounds of what is acceptable in the free exchange of ideas. The fact that such groups have a right to voice their abhorrent ideas does not mean that a great university ought to lend them a podium.

The Palestinian Solidarity Movement (the student arm of the International Solidarity Movement) advocates the destruction of the State of Israel. It endorses the “right” of Palestinian Arabs to accomplish this goal by “any means necessary,” including the suicide bombings of civilians, a tactic that Adam Shapiro, the group’s co-founder, and other Movement leaders have publicly and enthusiastically endorsed. The attitude of the group toward Israelis can only be described as racist. At last year’s Conference, held at the University of Michigan, delegates chanted “Kill the Jews.”

We call upon President Holbrook to disassociate Ohio State University from the Palestinian Solidarity Movement, and from the race-hatred and terrorism that it advocates by refusing to allow the Palestinian Solidarity Movement to meet on the Ohio State Campus.

Sincerely,
Ohio State Alumni/ae Against Palestinian Terrorism

We urge everyone who opposes the use of terrorism to achieve political goals to write to President Holbrook (in care of her assistant: bigfeather.1@osu.edu) urging her to bar this meeting from the campus.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned
