Can immigrants to Israel become part of the Knesset or do MK's have to be Sabras? If so, is it possible to become the leader of, or enter the higher eschelons of, a political party in Israel?
What i'm really asking is, if i make aliyah to Israel, could i be President in 20 years? :D :p

Most MK's and ministers throughout Israeli History were not born in Israel.
Ben Gurion, Israel first PM was born in region of modern Russia, Haim Wiessman, Israel first president and a great Zionist leader, the one who accuired the Balfur declaration as a personal favor of Loyed George to him, was born and acted most of the time in the UK.
Natan Sheransky is a MK and now minister since few years since his arrivle to Israel from soviet gulag where he was tortured for his simple request to leave the socialist heaven in favour of Israel. (Odd, 24 years ago, it were the conservatives headed by Regan, who supported human rights vs. the evil lefties... Now the lefties believe they can teach the rest of us all about human rights, even in the price of our own human rights of survival... ).
Two Teheran born Jews: Israel's President, Moshe Katzav (top ceremonial position), and Shaul Moffaz, former chief of staff, and now the minister of security. Both fluent in Pharsi, (and both delayed at american airports... Togather with our Diva: Rita ).

Peres didn't have any army experience and he was prime minister.

Well I remember in the 96 elections I got a flyer from Netanyahu supporters and the flyer compared the two, and they wrote that while Netanyahu is a war hero, brother of a war hero and so on... Peres never served in the army.
Dont know if this flyer had any influence but I guess that the lack of military experience gave Peres his "softy" image, and that's true to politicians from the left and the right, from Dan Meridor to Yossi Beilin, if you didn't had a remarkble military carrer your chances in Israeli politics are much lower than your rival Degeneral.

Golda Meir, Ben-Gurion for example were not 'military men'. Bibi's career is really more of a career diplomat than a military man. And correct me if I'm wrong but a signficant number of left leaning politicos in Israel are or were senior military staffers too. It's really not about your obesssion with attempting to compare Israel with say, Argentine Juntas of the 1980's. It really is about politics.

I'd be amazed if you suddenly didn't accept Arafat as your new Jesus just because he's a 'military man' too.

He is not a military man, just like our old friends Begin and Shamir he is a Terrorist\Freedom fighter or how you'd like to see him,
anyway Arafat couldnt have a chance to progress in a real military, they don't like homosexuals there, and your friend and mine is one, not there's anything wrong with it.

Yes just like in any place, Military carrer brings some prestige and many votes, but in Israel it's not much about oportunism, Israel politics works like the draft in american sports, any retired degeneral is approached by all parties, and picks the one that promises him the best place, Barak could join the likud just the same he joined the avoda, but the Likud didnt had any available places, and the avoda had an aging leader (Peres), Itzhak Mordechai joined the Likud in 1996 because he was promised to get the Security Portfolio, Lipkin Shahak had less choise because he was portraid as a Leftwinger so he could join to the good soldier ehud or go by his own, he choose the second and paid the price for it, Mofaz didnt had a choise the Sharon called him and he was portraid as a rightwinger, The current Commander in chief tries to play for both sides to keep options open, and so on... The sad part is that the public actualy buys it, but maybe the success of Shinui and Jean marie la-pid shows that our nation affair with degenerals is decreasing.

Maybe its a matter of place and time and not the dark plot you imagine it to be. After all weren't most of the so called founding fathers of the Great Satan military men?

But I sense your horror is more about Israeli society in general and not the leaders. I doubt even you would propose you are living under a Junta.

Yeah I do, kind of. Either that or a childish poser drunk on their own hollow slogans. If that flatters you then all it proves is you'd rather be hated than ignored.

Nothing bad about Cuba... If only they could copyright Che Geuara they could be a very rich country, and the teenagers who buy his t-shirts could be proud of giving money to Fidel and friends.
