PETITION TO STOP PAKISTAN FROM BEING DESIGNATED A “MAJOR NON-NATO U.S. ALLY”
The United States Congress will soon receive notification from the State Department to designate Pakistan a "major non-NATO ally". This decision is intended to pave the way for easy access to US weaponry by Pakistan’s military dictatorship, a move that will not only destabilize the region, but also seriously jeapordize the security of the United States itself by putting lethal arms into an unstable country – arms that if captured by terrorists could be turned against US or allied interests anywhere in the world.
Sign this petition to protest and stop the State Department from sending the wrong message to terrorists, nuclear proliferators and rogue nations across the world!
THE ISSUE
The US Secretary of State Colin Powell on March 18, 2004 announced America’s decision to designate Pakistan a "major non-NATO ally". The State Department is in the process of notifying Congress of this decision. If this decision becomes final, Pakistan will:
-Obtain priority delivery of defense material and the purchase, for instance, of depleted uranium anti-tank rounds
-Stockpile US military hardware, participate in defense research and development programs
-Benefit from a US Government loan guarantee program, which backs up loans issued by private banks to finance arms exports
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
The Pakistani military government is being rewarded in its role in the War on Terror even though it has repeatedly undermined all civilized attempts to keep the world safe from terrorists and nuclear proliferation. Specifically the Pakistani dictatorship has:
-Created, trained and supported the Taliban in Afghanistan
-Provided shelter and backing to Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda for years
-Promoted terrorism in India, threatening nuclear retaliation to any Indian response
-Proliferated nuclear technology to virtually all of the world’s rogue states – N Korea, Libya, Iran…
-Allowed its nuclear scientists full access to develop links with terror organizations such as Al Qaeda
The State Department is knowingly rewarding the Pakistani dictatorship in a vain attempt to prop up the current dictator, Pervez Musharaff. Islamic extremists have repeatedly tried to assasinate Musharaff for turning against them under US pressure after 9/11, even though his cooperation has been extremely half hearted. Therefore, to help this one man, the United States is sending weapons into a country which the Pew Center reports only 6% of the citizens view the US favorably and 65% unfavorably!
Understand what this means: Instead of assisting Pakistan with its bankrupt economy or broken down education system – where Islamic scholars are now teaching hundreds of thousands of schoolboys to hate Americans, Indians and Jews - we will be provding weapons that could be turned against us! Perhaps most of concern, is the possiblility that the US transfers F-16 fighters to Pakistan – planes that can be used to drop nuclear weapons, thereby placing the whole region, from Israel to India in serious danger. All to prop up one man – and that too a military dictator!!
ACT NOW
USINPAC (http://www.usinpac.com), the leading political action committee representing the voice of Indian-Americans on Capitol Hill, strongly opposes this move and is taking the lead in educating all Americans on the serious nature of this development. This is NOT an Indian American issue, but an AMERICAN issue. As Indian Americans, we understand the region, and are compelled to warn our fellow Americans as to the dangerous policy being followed by the State Department. We are not motivated by any dislike or distrust of the peoples of Pakistan, who have suffered greatly under years of mis-rule by successive extremist Islamic and military governments – rather we are dismayed that this move will send precisely the wrong message to terrorists and rogue nations at this critical point in the War on Terror.
PETITION
I REJECT EFFORTS BY THE STATE DEPARTMENT TO DECLARE PAKISTAN A MAJOR NON-NATO ALLY – UNDERSTANDING THAT THIS WILL GIVE AN UNSTABLE MILITARY DICTATORSHIP GREATER ACCESS TO WEAPONRY THAT COULD EVENTUALLY BE USED AGAINST THE UNITED STATES AND ITS FRIENDS. I SUPPORT THE GRANTING OF NON-MILITARY AID TO PAKISTAN IN RETURN FOR ITS COMPLETE COOPERATION IN THE WAR ON TERROR.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned
