Amazing that Sheikh Palazzi is still alive, isn't it?
RELIGION
Pro-Israel Imam Praised by Jews, Decried by Islamic Group
From Religion News Service
May 11 2002
TORONTO -- These days, a rousingly pro-Israel talk before a Jewish audience isn't news--except when it's delivered by a Muslim cleric, and in a synagogue to boot.
Sheik Abdul Hadi Palazzi, a Sunni cleric who spoke to synagogue audiences in three Canadian cities recently, was hailed as a beacon of sanity by Jewish groups, and condemned as anti-Islamic by the Canadian Islamic Congress.
Palazzi, an imam and secretary-general of the Italian Muslim Assn., is known for his vocal beliefs that suicide bombings by Islamic extremists are inimical to Islam and constitute fitnah, or sedition. Thus, they are deserving of punishment. Among his other controversial views are that Israel should retain control over all Jerusalem; that Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat is an unrepentant terrorist who will never make peace with the Jewish state; and that the West is being hypocritical in its fight against terrorism while it condemns Israel's military campaign in the Palestinian territories.
In a strongly worded statement, the Canadian Islamic Congress, an umbrella group for the country's 650,000 Muslims, called Palazzi an "anti-Islam campaigner" whose speaking tour will inflame tensions between Muslims and Jews.
The congress said the sponsor was "playing with fire" by having Palazzi talk at a Winnipeg synagogue. In Toronto, where he spoke to about 600 people, Palazzi dismissed the Islamic congress as "a branch of Hamas," the militant Palestinian organization that has claimed credit for a number of suicide bombings aimed at Israeli civilians.
The 41-year-old cleric said Islam clearly forbids both suicide and terror against civilians. "These are opposed to the dictates of Islam, and it is the moral duty of Islamic scholars to speak out," he said.
And denying Jewish rights to Israel, including Jerusalem, negates Islamic history, he argued.
"The Arab national movement and the Zionists were allies after World War I," he said, adding that Arab leaders at the time "recognized the Koranic prophecy of the return of the Jews to Israel. The Koran says the Jewish exile would not last forever."
Today's many Muslim leaders in the Arab world, especially in Palestinian-influenced areas, distort Islam's teachings, he charged.
"We must denounce fundamentalist movements in the name of Islam.... In behavior and policy, this is opposed to Islam. The intifada is also condemnable under Islamic law."
He also said Arafat "will never make peace, and it is absurd to expect that [he] will fight terror."
The sheik decried what he called the West's hypocrisy in the fight against terrorism by criticizing Israel.
In 1998, Palazzi co-founded the Islam-Israel Friendship Society, which promotes a positive Muslim attitude toward Jews and Israel. John Esposito, author of "Unholy War: Terror in the Name of Islam" and a professor of Islamic studies at Georgetown University, told the Ottawa Citizen that Palazzi's Koran interpretations are "not credible."
"I'm not too sure who, other than Palazzi, supports the position" that the Koran endorses Jerusalem as an Israeli-held capital, Esposito said. "I understand why Jewish groups like him--he's got a good product to sell--but when you talk about top scholars on Islam, I've never heard his name mentioned."

I heard about Sheik Palazzi......
He is a very strong man. He points out that there should be a unity between Jews and Muslims. I wish that he can do many lecutres in Israel as well some day.
I think that he points out cleary to his islamic brothers and sisters that Jerusalem is not a holy city but a city that is more politcily gripped with Arab Nationalism.
I think he wants to open a new era in Islam which promoted tolerance and reconcilation with jews. As the Jews and Muslims who were once the best of friends in times of the spanish inqusition should come together and unite as one and learn from one another.

Yes, I know about Sheikh Palazzi. May G-d bless him and protect him. For other Islamic-Jewish contacts check out the Root and Branch Association. Also, thanks for the article from the Lebanese Star about the real reason for the start of the Intifada. I cut and pasted it and sent it to the President and FoxNews.

Well...
Ofcourse Palazzi is just one muslim, but we are talking about a couple of muslims, some times there are muslims everywhere who wants Jewish-Muslim Committe to be set up.
Many people, especailly high/important people in the Islamic World who want to see change and to have Israel and the Jewish People as a friend are muted by evil powers like in Saudi Arabia and Iran. Even, some places like Jordan And Egypt does the same, and we made peace with them!!!
There are today in both Jordan and especially Egypt, journalists who talk pro-israel and pro-west. Some articles that are famous are ones with the heading "We need change" or "We wants democracy" others are more specific like "Why not have the Israeli Embassy when you have the Yugoslavian one (Saudi)". And ofcourse there is a famous 1 which was done in 1980, that an egyptian guy wrote. He talked about peace and pride and how Israel is a good country and a better one from other Arab Nations, from people to economy to government...anyways...he was killed shortly after.
As for turkey, Turkey has been a really good country with Israel. Maybe not in the start, but surely in the 60's through today was have been very good frineds in both technology and military components and even toursim and investment! Infact, not many know that Turkey was armed with Israeli Phantom 4, in the 1st would-be war better Turkey-Greece. More modern today, the biggest man force and equipment force to assist the Turk's in the devastating 1999 Earthquake was israel, and many of the injured were flown directly to Israel for SPECIAL TREATMENT. Americans never let them stay in Rammstein, Germany which they had special places and the Arabs (syria/lebanon) only offered a couple of special units and beds. And as of last year, Turkey assisted Israel in last summers water drought, by brining about 10 ton planes into Israel filled with water week!!!
Turkey has and is proud of its democracy from the feild to politics they view Israel as a legitimate friend who they can share and become acquinted with. And i see it not only in the high spot but also in sports....
Fenerbahce (Istanbul Club soccer team) has a star player from Israel who loves Turkey, the fans and the soccer enviorment! He has a good fan base and the turkish fans really see him as a superstar!!!
That's great, Pushtak and Night_Flight! This is highly encouraging. I heard something of the sort from outside, but it's good to hear it "from the horse's mouth", so to speak.

I don't know about Jordan, but in Egypt there is ONLY ONE journalist who is pro-Israel. He is the Cheif Editor of the ONLY christian newspaper in Egypt (called Watani, and his name is Mr. Sidhom). He can't be arrested since this would be the spark of a huge christian-muslims riot/clash in Egypt. I bet anyone to give me the name of another journalist in Egypt who is pro-Israel (.... and still alive!).

there are quite a few. Im not saying that they have to be pro-israel, but some are pro west which is good and object to the moubarak governement.
some say that moubarak is not a key player, some say he is worn down and when you mock Hosni, your in some hot waters.
But on any sense, the people who are pro-israeli or pro-western do not live in Egypt. Many of them live in the US, Canada, England and Europe. Some do live in Israel as well.
I think one of them was Saaid Yousef, you might have not heard of him, but around Jan 2001, he was kidnapped by Force 17 and held for sometime. He lives in Israel and writes from israel and he repsects Israel and he even said it in hebrew tv!!!
As for the Jordanians, they have many outspoken women, im not sure if they are west, but are mostly influenced by it.
There are also anti-monarchy newspapers that float in amman, but im sure they have been punished.
There is free press in both Egypt and Jordan, but it will take some time for them to see anything, unfortunelty!

Dear pushtak actually turkey was the first muslim country that recognized israel when it was found in 1948.
the last improovement between israel and turkey is that turkish military tanks' modernization agreement. Turkish was always good to jews. in the ottoman empire jews from spain was rescued and when te ww2 brokeout , many jews in germany were given the turkish passport in order to rescue them from the holocaust. i hope turkey and israel will broaden their ties.

Iori Yagami,
I know it does sound ridiculous, but there is something called the FREE PRESS in both Jordan and Egypt. Yes, you are right, but don't get confused here; It virtually doesn't exist!
Most of the Egyptian writers for these magazines are stationed in Europe. Im not saying there very western, but there anti-government sometimes there Pure Islamic Newspaper that preaches Terror , hatred and incitement. Whatever the case might be, there is some force like that, but there not writing it from Egypt, instead...from other places.
They have no word and no subscriber base, because most of there newspapers are blacklisted or never sold.
its the Cairo-Amman underground...you gotta know it!

Im not sure if Turkey was a country to accept Israel. Im not sure where they were because, i think they were in the abcenties side. I seem to get that one confused because Greece, didn't want Israel, and i think Turkey was in the same spot as they are, but im not sure!
As for ties between Israel & Turkey..it has grown better. We are now doing Military co-operation. Both of us fear Iran, which is our enemy. And both are working in building excellen cooperation.
As for the Ottman empire. Yes; Jews were given a hymn in the Ottaman empire after the Spanish Inquizition. And i think some, especailly Romanian's, Hungarians, Greeks, and Bulgarian jews got a free hymn in Turkey, so that was good.
But there was alot of disruption of jews who lived in the Ottaman empire around the 1900th century. There were some sort of persecution. Especially if you had to get a ID card, you had to write that your a jew. But nonetheless, life was good there :)
And turkey was good to us :)
I've been to turkey once.....one of the most nicest places i ever been! :)

pushtak,..
yes im sure that turkey was the first muslim country that accepted israel as a country. cos we had many problems with arabs and they backstabbed turks during the ww1
the other reason is that after Ataturk turkish policies and islam has been liberalized and acceptin israel was not that bad.
well its not my own words but sephardic jews in ottoman emp. that they say ottoman empire was a heaven for jews after exterminated from spain.
i dont know but i have a symphaty towards israel. one day i 'd like to visit there. i bought an israel t-shirt from the store and i wear it here in Ankara :)
cos we had many problems with arabs and they backstabbed turks during the ww1
Could you elaborate, please? Just curious... (you know, "curiosity killed the cat.. :) )

Night_Flight - ? what to make of this article from today's Christian Science Monitor.
http://www.csmonitor.com/2002/0605/p06s02-woeu.html
excerpt -
"By Andrew West | Special to The Christian Science Monitor
ANKARA, TURKEY – Turkey, a key Western ally, is experiencing an Islamic revival that some Turks see as a threat to this officially secular nation.
Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit's steadfast refusal to resign or call early elections, despite a recent illness, has many analysts suggesting that the secular establishment fears the religious parties now leading in opinion polls.
.......
Since the Israeli military invasion of Palestinian towns on the West Bank this spring, Islamist rhetoric has risen in Turkey, with some leaders also calling for greater Muslim brotherhood."

dear mediocrates if the article that you illustrate rahter interesting. it says being ally with israel was rather an elisthist movement. then i should consider myself as an elithist though im belong to middle class lol. and this is the first time i hear that turkish gonna vote for religous parties just becouse palesteni issue. the other words are not wrong i should accept. but im still hoping for DYP (a right liberal party in turkey) to come to rule cos it is well known that DYP supports israel though it was ally with a religous party in turkey. thats why the alliance was collapsed with DYP and Refah pary.
actually lets hope for both countries (israel ,Turkey) for getting closer relations. :)

About Saaid Yousef, i don't know much about him. Infact, as far as the current intifhada, i didn't know nothing about him.
What i do know is that, he is a free lance writer who came to Israel in the late late 70's or early 80's, to write freely. He talked about Israel and about the goodness of it. He usually mocks the hosni moubarak government and critizise egypts use in the Arab Leauge.
He is a well known writer indeed, alot of people want his head in Cairo, but Israel is a safe haven for him.
Not so long ago, Yousef went to the West Bank to visit a friend, and he got kidnapped by Force 17 officers. He was in there captivity for about 14-28 days, and he got beaten up badly and was tortured pretty well.
he was interviewed by Israeli TV and he was crying and shamming about how evil palestinians are and how good israel is too him and his family!

dear Elke,
my own opinion is obvious. i support israel in all fields becouse it seems to me that turkey and israel are very similar as governments and problems.
our governments are allies and that irritates both greeks and armenians (i even dont count arabs)
i talked with many people about israeli turkish relations and most of which said "israel kills palestenians yeah, but israel has good relations with turkey"
saccording to my own evaluation especially in big cities such as Istanbul Ankara Izmir, people dont have any symphaty against arabs besides turks consider arabs as filthy and dirty mannered people as cleanness manners or eating habbits. but turks have not enough info about israelies. i personally do know about israel and im not objective and i support it.
there are many friends of mine who think in the same way with me. and of course there are numerous think just the opposit
wisit--> http://www.turkey.com/forums/showthread.php3?threadid=3803&pagenumber=1 and see how i and many people support israel in turkish forums and see how arabic propagandas in turkey effect turkish people against israel. its mixed now.
my hope is that israel supporters have to be increase in turkey and turk supporters must be increase in israel. both countries shouldnt be effected from propagandas. turks and jews lived in peace many years. you will find a turkish-israeli relations there in politics threads.also anti israel freaks. and there is an israel cuisine thread in it. Well, as far as governments go, Israel and Turkey are in a quite close relatioponship. Actually, that 77' movie about the guy that was arrested in Turkey for carrying drugs ("Midnight Express"?) was actually banned in Israel for quite a while, in order to "not hurt our close ally".
Night_Flight : I wonder, how do the parliament members treat the Israeli affair? I`ve heard one of the ministers talking about an Israeli genocide against the pallies, but afterwards he apologized. What do the others think?

well. Midnight Express is full of lies. its an anti turkish propaganda movie just like the movie arart or lawrance. no body treats foreigners as their enemy here. on the contrary foreigners are interested here and they are welcomed. you can ask tourists who have been in turkey before.
yeah our P:M said its a genocide and he apologized and he said his speech exceeded its direction. actually he is over 70 and he is badly sick now.
which i like the movie that is related with jewish history is La vita é Bella (life is beautiful) i always cry at the end of the movie. its really saddening and impressive.
Although turkey is a muslim country it has better relations with israel than all arabic countries. yes ALL arabic countries.
syria and iraq supported PKK (kurdish terrorists)
lebanon supported PKK and ASALA(armenian terrorist group that kiiled 70 turkish ambassador over the world)
Saudi arabia destroys ancient turkish historical buildings in saudi arabia. to sum up Turks and Turkish regym are hated by arabic governments. and most of arab folk.
as if we turks love them so much! lol arabs have really a bad image here. turks say most arabs are filty dirty uncivilized people
they eat their food with their bare hand though they got spoons and forks. and they clean up their hands to their clothes.
that one is rather common in turkey lol.
israel and turkey are really more friendly than arabic countries indeed. but some people here are not aware of it. lol

Yea, i didn't see the midnight express, i might rent it out maybe...but there is a famous scene where he boards the plane and they start to arrest him and he has stuff on himself, that was from the simpsons. I thought it was orignally from Tunisia or Turkey? How odd!
If you want to go see a good movie, there is a movie called TRAFFIK, not Traffic with michael douglas, but a 70's cult film that is the same as the Traffic that was made not so longago. It is about the asian opium importers. It didn't really talk about US or anything but its simply was filmed in Drug areas like Iran-Iraq, Pakistan and Afganistan. Pretty good movie, its in english.... was made in 1990.
As for the movie, yea i think it is bull. I have been to Turkey and even at night in the city and i think its one of the most safest citys in the world. There is hardly crime and assaults. Its a very friendly tourist atmosphere that i really like.
The thing about Turkey is that they went to the middle east back in December and they wanted to be fair with Sharon and with Yasser Arafat, which kinda makes israelis think that Turkey is both sided here, eventhough there is the Arab think going on.
I wonder why Syria and Iraq supports Kurds. Afterall, when the time comes Kurdistan wil be made out of lands from Iraq, Syria, Turkey and Iran.....so whats the use of supporting them?
Also, about the murdering of 70 ambassadors? did they murder any in Canada? Cause i saw a lot of support for them in there? I remember in 1998 or 99, the PKK leader was kidnapped, the Kurds blamed everyone. Even the Israelis. They went to our embassy and threw **** at it..... hell with them!

Turkish population is nearly 70 million
kurdish population is nearly 11 million in turkey.
there are two types of kurds in turkey.
1-)kurds who integrated to turkish folk.. they support turks in all fields and those who support turks is majority of kurds.
2-)a minority of kurds support pkk and recently their own aim is to improve themselves as econamically. becouse they are mainly poor villager people. and they saw no point in supportin pkk after all there wasn't any considerable change in their lifestyle. supporting pkk brought them nothing but turkish hostilety.
thank god they are minority.
it may appear that a kurdish state will be established soon. But i assure all of my brothers there in israel that there wont be any land called kurdistan in turkish borders. Because one of the main turkish policies is to maintain turkish borders till the end. and Turks are determined about it. it looks like israel and it policies about palestenia.
By the way Mossad helped turkey in capturing pkk's leader. Turkish inteligent service (MIT) , CIA and Mossad worked together in that issue.
the one who assasinated 70 turkish ambassador over the world was not PKK. it was ASALA..
ASALA is an a r m e n i a n terrorist group. they say we took revenge from turks by killing 70 turkish ambassador. their point is that so called genocide against armenians.
as you see Turkey and israel are the most unwanted states in the middleeast. isnt it a naturel resultof being allies?

Actually Turkish policies in middleeast is to keep the stability. it may appear a both sided policie. but it should be justifable if those are considered:
-Turkish is a muslim country and palestenians are also muslim. religion is the decisive thing here. but it can be discussed how palestenians are also both sided. they were supporting greeks when the greeks cutting turks in southern cyprus.
-Jewish-Turkish historical ties. jews and turks were always good to eachother and supported eachother .and jews were the only minority who didnt backstabb turks in the ottoman empire.
-Ataturk's ideologies that says peace in the home, peace in the world.
these three may be a reason why turks have to be good to both jews and palestenians.
when the time comes kurdistan will be establised by iraq syria and turkey?
well. Pushtak,
Turkey wont give even a tiny mini land for kurds nor another minority. Ottoman empire has given the lands enough. dont you think so?
and your last paragraph. well i already said. it was ASALA the armenian terrorists.

Night_Flight,
I agree with all your points....
Israel and turkey have a very good relationship with one another. In the 3 would-be wars with Greece, israel always steeped in and helped Turkey with its miliary power by giving them ammo and planes, if needed.
I think that in honour of the jewish people, Turkey has created a museum in Istanbul regarding ottoman's empire jewish group, and they have pictures and artifacts and very intresting info about Jews who lived in Turkey since they were expelled from Spain in the late late 1400's. I would like to see it.
I agree that Turkey should be 2 sided in this conflict as well. Turkey is a good nation and it can play a vital role in the middle east. Time has change and there is hipe and opprotunity rising. :)
I would like more firms and cooperation with Turkey in the coming years? :) what do you say?

Absouluteley right. i'd really really like to see Turkey and Israel closer and in a stronger alliance. That's needed for strenghten our historically ties and our common opportunities. You know Turkish army and israeli army are two of the most strongest armies in the world.
