Being Israeli

Being Israeli means turning the television on at night and seeing that instead of Rambo III, a local suspense film is being aired, with us as the actors.
It means hoping that there is no one there that you know, rejoicing that there is no one there that you know, and then feeling ashamed that you rejoiced.
It means watching the screen even though you know precisely what the next image will be.
It means going around the house at 2:00 AM to watch the children sleeping, thinking that under the blankets they suddenly seem so small again.

Being an Israeli means being able to tell something happened by the songs playing on the radio.
It means thinking just to yourself, that when there are terror attacks you get to hear the nicest songs.
It means understanding that if the newscasters say "There are casualties," they actually mean there are fatalities, and that "mortally wounded" means someone is fighting for his life.
It means asking yourself what "suffering from shock" means exactly and understanding yourself after a few seconds.
It means calling up relatives even though it is late and asking how things are, as if you were calling for no reason.
It means going to the mall as if you are going out on army reserve
duty, and going out to reserve duty as though you have gone to war.
It means saying, "If I had any brains, I would move to Australia," but not really meaning it. It means fighting a bit more with the person you live with, but not admitting to yourself that is because of the tension.

Being Israeli means saying "We have to attack them real hard," without truly knowing who 'them' refers to.
It means saying , "This cannot go on this way," but fearing that
perhaps this is exactly how it will go on.
It means saying, "Gaza has got to be conquered," just to hear yourself say it.
It means understanding that there is no simple solution, but hoping that perhaps there is one.
It mean listening to radio shows on which people call in and say
terrible things, thinking that it proves how far we have deteriorated, but actually wanting to call in yourself.
It means remembering that in your life you have put too much trust in leaders who have let you down, but convincing yourself that maybe there still is someone else out there. It means telling yourself that it is time to draw up a will, but not doing it.

Being Israeli means feeling unexplained fatigue in the middle of the day, a fatigue that starts in your shoulders and travels down your spine.
It means being a secular person who asks what is going on with God, or a religious person asking what is going on with the IDF.
It means saying, "More people die in traffic accidents," but not being sure that that is still true.
It means calculating that after Jerusalem and Haifa, Tel Aviv will surely be next.
It means being angry when people say "a sophisticated terror attack," because they do not deserve even that compliment.
It means meeting a friend who asks if you have heard that George Harrison died and thinking that he must live on Mars.
It means knowing, with a clear and paralyzing knowledge, that in a day, at most two, you will find out that you knew someone who died. And if not, then you will know someone who knows someone.

Being Israeli means saying, "I'm fine, the country is in the dumps."
It means beginning sentences with the expression, "Aside from the situation,"
It means canceling trips, because this is not the time and then
traveling anyway because you decided to hell with it all.
It means suddenly recalling Rabin.
It means that you have never spoken to your son about that war and swearing you will find time for it.
It means wanting to go to that Georgian movie [the most recent Israeli film release, "A Late Wedding," which discusses a Georgian family in Israel] that everyone is discussing, because you feel like doing something Israeli.
It means eating more than usual, getting up late, and then going out for a run, and noticing that everyone has been telling jokes recently.
It means knowing that all this symbolizes something, but not being sure what.

Being Israeli means feeling that the country is a bit too much for
you.
It means exchanging familiarities with strangers.
It means hearing strange expressions from people you thought you know well..
It means hearing your prime minister speak of "power of endurance" and understanding, belatedly, that he means you.
It means comforting yourself by saying that at least this year it is raining.
It means standing at the window with a cup of tea and thinking, for the first time in years, how nice it is of God to clean up the world this way.
It mean accepting a postdated check, because that is also connected to the situation.
It means sitting up at night with the bills and deciding that you have got to cut down on the expenses.
It means looking at the pictures instead of reading the papers. Being Israeli means being a little bit of a better person than you thought you could be.

How very nice and poetic.

Unfortunately I can add that being an Israeli also

means that when going on a trip abroad you suddenly become a true communist, taking with you the hotel’s towels, bed sheets, faucets, mini bar, etc.

means when you overturn someone on the road from the right side, you cannot understand why he yells at you, but when someone overturns you from the right side, you feel compelled to remind him of the profession of his mother.

means you’re idea of celebrating Israel’s independence is going to a beautiful park and together with 50,000 other Israelis, trash the place doing “mangal” (bbq)

means you get angry seeing expression of anti-Semitism in Europe, but you feel perfectly fine calling the Russian girl “whore”, the Russian man “drunk”, the Persian “cheap”, the Moroccan “violent” the Arab “smelly”, the Romanian “thief”, the Polish “stupid”...

means you feel totally connected to the suffering of the Israeli casualties of the terror attacks, but when Palestinians die because the army refused to let ambulances pass you say “that’s war”.

means you protest loudly when the government raises taxes, but asks if you can pay “without a receipt”.

means you feel appalled after the latest news item about the poor/unemployed/crippled and but when they come to your door for a contribution you say “I gave at the office.”

means you talk about how the situation is getting worse ... while chewing 500gr file steak in a restaurant.

means you chant anti-Microsoft slogans in forums around the world ... while copying MS Office XP from a friend.

means you believe rapists should get harsher punishments, but call your secretary “sugar”.

Here is another open letter I came across. It is from Kilgore who admits and make no claim to know much about the Middle East.
-----------------------------------------------------
I've gotten a few emails in my box asking where I've been.

The fact is that I don't have anything to write about anymore. As far as the Middle East goes, I'm for Israel. I do not care about atrocities or any of that garbage. The Palestinians are seen as the victims because they simply don't have the firepower. So now they resort to sending in children and females strapped with TNT and nails. I don't know about you folks, but I would surrender before I let my children and womenfolk do my fighting for me.

There has given us a lot of history, and there's been a whole lot of talk back and forth on this issue. I can agree that Israel is not squeaky clean in this affair. So what? There ain't a country or people that does not have some atrocities to answer for. Take the Aztecs. Yeah, the Spaniards slaughtered them and took their gold. But these are the same savages who were offering human sacrifices. Who cares how they died?!

Here's the Kilgore view of the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict:

The Jews were pissed for taking it on the chin during WWII and start moving into the neighborhood. They are in a foul mood and decide to look out for numero uno. **** the world and pass me a bagel. Anyway. . .

The Palestinians get pissed and tell the Jews, "We're going to leave now, and when we come back with our Arab brothers, we are going to kick your dirty Jew asses!!"

They came back, and Israel kicked the **** out of them. Dejected, the Palestinians regrouped and said, "Our Arab brothers are with us. We are going to kick your asses, and we mean it this time!" The Israelis kicked the **** out of them again.

Fast forward to today. The Palestinians say, "**** your peace offers!! We are going to kick your asses, and we don't need no help from our Arab brothers because they are tired of getting their asses kicked." Israel is now kicking the **** out of the Palestinians.

Each night, I like to pop some popcorn and listen to the whining on NPR. I'm rooting for the Israelis because they are going to win. Period. I don't care who the good guys or the bad guys are. It's a shame that Netanyahu isn't in charge because his English is a lot better than Sharon's.

But here is the clincher. The Israelis destroy some hovel in Ramallah, and the Palestinians start crying, "You've killed civilians. Innocent women and children even!!"

That's a real goddamn shame. Just think of how many suicide bombings those same women and children could have pulled off.

You think that Saddam Hussein and the rest of those idiots are going to pay these families for their losses? Hell, no, but you can beat they will be bankrolling more suicide bombers.

The Arabs are not our allies. They never were and never will be. They hate us because we eat pork, drink liquor, respect our women, use toilet paper, and don't have to pray five times a day.

It boils down to sheer jealousy.

I'm not into assigining blame, protecting the victims, or any of that other whining ass bullshit. If Israel was led by Darth Vader and the Anti-Christ, I would still be on their side. You want to know why? Go down a street in Tel Aviv with a sign that says, "Sharon sucks my big fat dick!!" Do the same in Saudi Arabia only replace "Sharon" with "King Fahd" and see what happens. The bottom line is that a bad democracy beats a dictatorship every time. The reason why Israel gets bad press is because they allow it. When was the last time you heard about atrocities in Saudi Arabia?

Finally, what Israel is doing, we are doing in Afghanistan. It is going on. I can guarantee you some wicked **** is happening over there. But I know you bleeding heart types just can't take this knowledge. It's a real shame you weren't in the WTC on Sept. 11. because you obviously would have been the only ones who would not have minded as these "oppressed" Arabs vented a little justified rage.

Here's a little equation that helps me understand

the "progressive" movement:

LIBERALISM=COWARDICE+STUPIDITY

Naturally, some wise ass will come up with an equation that says:

KILGORE=NAZI-HEALTHY SEX LIFE

Well, here's a pre-emptive **** YOU!!

I'm not going to feel sorry for the Arabs. It's not going to happen. They are the armpit of human civilization. If you think they are so swell, then take your sorry asses over there. Kiss their asses and tongue their balls even. This would go a long way to helping assuage the anger they must feel at our exploitation of them. It's a real shame how we force our money on them in exchange for all that oil. It's even worse when we actually had to step foot on that holy sand of theirs to protect them from their own Arab brothers. Christ in a henhouse!!

**** the Arab world and **** the Palestinians. They only understand force. You don't coddle these ****ers. You hurt them. It is the only thing they understand. How do I know this? Because Israel is still here, and none of them wants to go through any more assbeatings at the hands of the IDF.

Israel needs to throughly kick the Palestinians until they are beat down to almost nothing. Then they need to withdraw and build one hell of a wall. If a Palestinian climbs over, shoot his ass. In a hundred years, maybe the peace process can begin again.

Thus ends this rant. Like I said, I don't have anything to write about.

Long live Israel.

I guess the author of this idiotic rant is about 12 years old and overdosed on sugar.

So after tearing up his sand-box, he decided to write this rant and post it on the Internet, before his Ritalin kicked in.

Too bad this idiocy follows excellent posts by maco and sharonb.

I have to say... the first impulse shortly after reading halfway through sharonbn's criticisms was to become defensive. But on second thought, objectivity.... without being purposefully malicious and lining comments with sarcastic undertone (i hope sharonbn's comments were of a serious nature) is a good thing.

That "12 yr old rant" is exactly what the US government and masses of the populace thing regards the ME situation.

Sad isnt it, that whilst wiping out terrorism in 1 nation (and I 200% support the war on terror), the Americans are happy to arm a war in which children are killed, and the reasoning is "collateral damage".

I still understand the need for Op Defensive Shield, and still support the underlying reason-but recent British TV evidence suggests that IDF war crimes took place. :(
