Cairo Times published the story of Jack Bitton, an Egyptian who pretended to be a Jew and an Israeli; married a German woman who only after he died was informed that he was not a Jew but really a Moslem Egyptian spy.

Link to story below in 2 parts.

An interesting story. Googling for "jack bitton" comes up with no relevant matches except for your Cairo Times link.

Fiction?

It does not look like fiction to me. The other spies really existed and it's true that Israel got a few Egyptian Jewish amateurs in the early 50s to plant bombs at US facilities to cause trouble between Egypt and the USA. The farce was called the famous Lavon Affair; Lavon had to resign because it was pretty stupid and it put Egyptian Jews in more danger. I think Bitton is mentioned in some books.

I will ask my father if he ever heard of this guy. But it looks legitimate.

Was he circumcised? :)

There were quite a few Soviet spies in Israel - most were Jews from the Soviet diaspora.

He was an Egyptian Moslem so yes he was circumcised. His wife and kids only found out he was Moslem after he died! She thought he was a Jew.

So, did you ask your father if he ever heard of this case?

Yes I asked my father. He says he never heard of the case but he is fascinated by the story. I faxed it to him.

The guy obviously did exist. However how successful he was is questionable.

i saw his German wife in the TV yesterday tells how the Egyptian intelligence persecuted her and prevented her son to live and work in Egypt even after she converted to Islam

and also defended Bitton of lies by her recent Egyptian actor husband "Ehab Nafea" who said that Bitton was a double agent and his son Daniel is also a Mossad agent
