The Knesset yesterday passed the enabling legislation for the disengagement plan by a large majority of 59-40, with five abstentions.
The votes in favor of the evacuation-compensation law came from Labor, Shinui, Yahad, One Nation and 18 Likud MKs, while the votes against came from the National Union, the National Religious Party, Shas and 17 Likud MKs. The five abstentions came from the Arab parties. United Torah Judaism's five MKs did not attend the vote.
Disengagement supporters successfully defeated the hundreds of proposed amendments to the bill submitted by its opponents, including some that would have conditioned implementation of the pullout on a referendum. That proposal failed by a vote of 72-26.
