BBC apologizes for airing erroneous story on IDF soldier

The British Broadcasting Corporation apologized Thursday for an item on a religious program that angered the Jewish community by "demonizing" Israel, The Daily Telegraph reported on Friday.

Dozens of complaints have been received about a story on BBC Radio 4's Thought for the Day during the Today program that suggested a Muslim corporal in the Israel Defense Forces had been jailed for refusing to shoot Palestinian children, according to The Telegraph.

The contributor, the Rev. Dr. John Bell, also apologized and admitted his story could have been interpreted as "furtive racism" at a time when "Jewish sensitivity in Britain is running high because of anti-Semitism."

A row continues over London mayor Ken Livingstone's refusal to apologise for likening a Jewish newspaper reporter to a concentration camp guard.

Dr. Bell said he did not intend to cause offense and acknowledged that aspects of his story were incorrect, the British daily reported.

Last Thursday Dr. Bell, of the Iona Community, an ecumenical Christian organisation, gave an account of the experiences of a Muslim in the IDF.

On the radio, Dr. Bell claimed he met the former corporal, an Arab Israeli called Adam, 19, in a Lebanese restaurant in Vancouver two years ago.

Dr. Bell said he was a soldier of "Palestinian Muslim stock, born in the state of Israel" who had been conscripted into the army.

He said the soldier told him he saved many lives by killing a suicide bomber who boarded a bus and he related how he was jailed for disobeying an order to shoot Palestinian schoolchildren, the Telegraph reported.

The suggestion that the IDF would order soldiers to kill defenseless children outraged the Jewish community.

Thursday a spokesman for the Board of Deputies of British Jews said: "This story appears to be a fabrication seeking to demonize Israel.

"The BBC's acknowledgement that there was no evidence for this is a positive sign and we hope that further contributions are checked more thoroughly," the spokesman told The Telegraph.

The anecdote was told the day after Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas had declared a truce offering hope for peace in the Middle East. It was supposed to illustrate the fact that the truce would not eradicate the historic hatred between Jews and Palestinians.

Jewish listeners contacted the BBC to point out that elements of the story could not be true. Israeli Arabs are exempt from conscription and it would be almost impossible for a soldier aged 19 to be promoted to corporal.

The BBC's apology said the corporation had been "unable to find any evidence to support the story". The Israeli authorities told the corporation that there was no proof of the soldier's existence.

Dr. Bell said he had wrongly assumed that the soldier had been conscripted and claimed that the soldier was 21, not 19.

He added: "I perfectly understand that at a time when Jewish sensitivity in Britain is running high because of anti-Semitism that part of my remarks might have been interpreted as furtive racism. However, such a conjecture would be completely untrue."

A spokesman at the Israeli embassy said: "It is important that Dr. Bell and the BBC recognise the damage that these kind of baseless and false allegations have caused.

"We appreciate that the BBC has apologised; however, it is a pity as the damage is irreparable. The BBC must act with more caution and responsibility to check facts before they are aired to millions of listeners."

Yes you are wrong. Neither Hollywood nor the media are "dominated" by Jews. However there are a lot of Jews in both industries but disproportionate to their size within the entire American populations. This is also true of Doctors and Lawyers. Does that mean that Jews control the AMA and the National Council of Lawyers? No.

Fact is, Jews are brought up with an enormous emphasis on education, ideological beliefs based on doing right and searching for the truth, and with the intent to be very successful. We want to be more than your avergae Joe and the high numbers of Jews in important positions is proof of our upbringing and success. Just look at how many Nobel prizes in science, technology, literature, etc. Jews have won compared to others. It's disproportionate too, but tdoes that mean that Jews control the Nobel Prize committee, the same one that awarded a prize to Arch Terrorist Yassir Arafat? No.

The bottom line is that yes, Jewshave a high presence in the industry, but if you are implying that they "control" those industries, I need to ask what your intent with a question like that is?

However, these Jews tend to be very liberal secular, as opposed to, say, neo--conservatives. All these Jews do is have parties and make movies and fund one charity or another. They have more in common with their gentile hollywood peers than with other Jews. They don't control much of anything.

The idea that they do is offensive, as it implies that there is some sort of organized conspiracy... which was the basis of the Holocaust and is a standard anti-semetic trope - oh, the Jews want to dominate the gentiles.

Well I notice alot of discrimination in the work place and alot of it is on whites I have noticed. Are there other forms of discrimination? Yes there is, but alot of the white discrimination you will never hear about it.

So many articles are published about Israel's Gaza "blockade", about the lack of electricity, about the border breach with Egypt. Here's a BBC cry-me-a-river op-ed about life in Gaza. All blame Israel, either explicitly or implicitly. None state the truth.

Here are some facts:
1. 70% of Gaza's electricity are provided by Israel. Hamas shut down the electricity to schools and hospitals and staged massive candlelight protests. None of the mass media outlets explicitly reported this fact. Instead they all focused on the Hamas-induced suffering, blaming Israel's "blockade". None reported the truth on the matter. None said how it was all well-planned, how Hamas members hid behind their women and children when they tried to provoke Egyptians at the border crossings.

2. Gaza's "suffering" is always blamed on Israel. No media outlet mentions the fact that Gaza's government is at war with Israel. Every one publishes the ficticious claims of "human rights violations" and "breaches of international laws". None state the truth--there are no violations of either. When your government/country wages a war on someone, population suffers. This is not "cumulative punishment" and is not a violation of anything.

Let's clarify that even more. IN ADDITION to the fuel that Israel SUPPLIES to Gaza (to help them produce about 20% of their electricity), Israel also supplies 75% of Gaza's electricity DIRECTLY.

That has not been touched.

But some of the journalists noticed that there was actually no need for the candles because both meetings were being held in daylight.

"They had closed the curtains in the rooms to create the impression that Hamas leaders were also suffering as a result of the power stoppage," one journalist told The Jerusalem Post. "It was obvious that the whole thing was staged."

Another journalist said he and his colleagues were told to wait for a few minutes before entering the chamber of the Palestinian Legislative Council so that each legislator would have time to light his candle. He said that when he saw that the curtains had been closed to prevent the light from entering, he realized that Hamas was trying to manipulate the media for political gain.

The Egyptian political world is once again up in arms against Israel. The reason this time: A declaration that was attributed to Israeli ambassador to Egypt, Shalom Cohen, in which he purportedly called for the inclusion of Hebrew classes in the official Egyptian school curriculum.

The alleged comments appear to have been published in Egyptian newspapers and from there they were taken by the al-Jazeera news network. According to the report, "Ambassador Cohen claimed that the Camp David Accords include a clause that mandates the inclusion of Hebrew in the Egyptian educational program." That seems to have been enough to reignite the fire of fury against Israel (http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3284752,00.html). This alleged remark has drawn fire from opposition politicians in Egypt, namely from the Muslim Brotherhood. The group has called for the Egyptian government to officially declare that it rejects this request because it deviates from common norms and damages Egyptian sovereignty.

'Hebrew is an artificial language'

Egyptian academics have not remained on the sidelines on this matter. "Cohen's request is a new humiliation for Egypt, its government and nation," Dr. Abdul Wahab al-Masri, an English literature lecturer, said on al-Jazeera.

"The Hebrew language is an artificial language taken from the past and even Israeli writers suffer from a lack of interest in writing it and (Hebrew articles) are usually translated into foreign languages," al-Masri said.

He added that the study of Hebrew must be completely prevented in junior colleges and other institutions and that it should only be taught to students in at the highest levels of education."We don't want to give this language the power that it doesn't deserve. It is enough for us that people will learn it in master's degrees and doctorates in the social sciences and this is only in order to become acquainted with Israeli society in order to know the enemy."

Israeli political officials denied the report in conversations with Ynet and claimed that Ambassador Cohen had never made the alleged remarks. "This is the continuation of a report by an Egyptian newspaper that we have already refuted in the past," the head of Arabic communications in the Foreign Ministry, Amira Oron said.

"We’re talking about a multi-year agenda that has unfortunately become the routine. We're dealing with a phenomenon that is intended to create a negative image of Israel," Oron added.
