I think that the palestinians would have calm if it wasn't for a few major factors that had to do with the September 2000 cahos that was going on in Israel.
For one thing, if we turn back history, there was a temple mount dispute that occured in 1998, or 1997...which about 50 people, or so got killed. Israelis didn't do nothing to provoke it, it was all because of a an english archelogist who discovered a tomb under the Al-Aksa mosque. Arafat was the bad guy to this. He was condemed by everyone, even Egypt and Jodan and i belive Bahrain took a stab at him as well.
He brought his own military in Israel's territory to play shoot out with Israeli police and later Israeli Military.... He never realized what he was doing, his PA police we're instructed to shoot at civilians and they managed to kill 4-5 civilians...
But when you come up to 2000, i think that you have to see Arafat had the ball. He could have ordered calm, but he LOVES IT, JUST LOVES IT when his people protests. Something that is odd in the islamic world is that when your angry you protest, but when you want to protest for Democracy it is forbidden. And then one death turned into the other. And instead of the UN watching carefully and calling for calm. Koffi the monkey annan codemned israel immediately, even at the time when Ehud Barak pulled out of some parts of the Palestinians and ordered a 24 hours halt to the violence.. Arafat refused....
After the Sharm-El-Sheik conference was done, when Arafat asked if he could stop the violence he states, no! And said "THE INTIFHADA SHALL GO ON, UNTIL A PALESTINIANS BOY/GIRL run with a Palestinian flag over Jerusalem.
So this is mad...I think that the UN has played an important role in the violence that has gripped Israel and the middle east for the past 19 month. If someone needs to stand trial, it should be Kofi Annan for his biased entity towards Israel and his anti-semetic gestures that helped inspire youths to once again, abolish the peace process and return to suicide bombings and rock throwing....
and there is also alot of blame in the Arab world too, but then again there life runs on oil and nomads!
