U.S. Caught in Arafat's Revolving Door
June 3, 2002

This week, a flurry of Palestinian activity has resulted in humiliation for the U.S. and Britain. Earlier, Arafat extended an official offer to include groups listed in the U.S. and EU list of terrorist organizations, in the “reformed†Palestinian leadership. The terrorist groups courted by Arafat include the Hamas, PFLP and Islamic Jihad, and their invitation to lead the Palestinian people amounts to a slap in the face to President Bush and his advisors.
To add insult to injury, now Arafat has also instructed an official Palestinian court to order the release of Ahmad Sa'adat, leader of the PFLP. Sa’adat is currently being held in a Ramallah prison under U.S. and British guard, as part of the U.S.-brokered deal to free Arafat from last month’s Israeli siege. The leader of the PFLP is wanted by Israel for planning and directing the assassination of Israeli tourism minister, Rehavam Ze’evi last year.
Like all previous deals with Arafat, the Palestinian leader has, once again, reneged on his commitments to fight terrorism and to hold Sa’adat prisoner. The news this time is that the prestige and credibility of the U.S. and of President Bush are at risk. To save face, the U.S. must act forcefully to ensure that Arafat upholds his commitments, because it was the U.S. and the EU who countered Ariel Sharon’s position that Arafat was not an “irrelevant†supporter of terrorism.
The U.S. will find itself now caught in Arafat’s revolving door, through which Palestinian mass murderers are set free in a record short time. The mistakes of the U.S. and the EU in continuing to maintain Arafat in a position of authority, are now painfully exposed by the ungrateful Arafat’s actions.
But, as the biblical saying goes, “there is nothing new under the sun.†Arafat has been and continues to be a terrorist supporter and perpetrator, whose goal is to destroy Israel through the use of terrorism. For a while, it seems that the U.S. was willing to prop up Arafat and save him from Israeli retaliation. Now, however, Arafat has dealt what might very well turn out to be a fatal blow to his benefactors. Arafat’s vision for reform is now clearer than ever – a higher degree of cooperation with internationally recognized terrorists, a continuation of his national Jihad against Israel, and at the same time, public humiliation for President Bush and Colin Powell.
