5765 Posts Rise in Aliyah from N. America and France

Aliyah (immigration) to Israel reached a six-year high in 5765, as more Jews from France and North America decided to end their exile and live in the land of Israel
The Absorption Ministry and the Jewish Agency (a semi-official body dedicated to settling Jews in Israel) have reported that 23,124 Jews settled in Israel in 5765, as compared to 21,604 in 5764.
Nearly 3,000 Jews (2,928) from North America made their home in the Jewish State in 5765, up from 2,269 last year. Slightly more Jews, 2,975, came from France, which has witnessed an upsurge of anti-Semitism in recent years. That number was significantly higher than last year’s total of 2,389 Jews.
Rises in aliyah were also reported from more unusual locales such as Thailand, Pakistan, Brunei, the Philippines, China, Japan, and Zimbabwe.
As in the previous decade, most new immigrants, 9768, came from states that comprised the former Soviet Union, but that number was down significantly from last year when 11,174 persons arrived from that region.
Ze’ev Bielski, who heads the Jewish Agency, attributes the rise in aliyah to three major factors: an improving economic and security situation, new methods of “marketing†Israel among Jewish communities abroad, and natural trends affecting Jewish communities in the Diaspora.
Bielski explained that successful aliyah occurs in three stages. First, prospective individual immigrants are introduced to Israel on brief pilot trips. Afterwards, they return and become more acquainted with potential employment and housing opportunities, leading to permanent residence on Jewish soil.
Once settled in, their families follow, and the future of more Jews are preserved for centuries to come.

Oh please this is straight up garbage. How many Jews? 8? 13? C'mon stop wasting our time with this.
Israel needs to kill two birds with one stone. Make aliyah more attractive and practical, and also increase it's supply of people with necessary skills-sets - specifically people who are technical experts in construction related fields: electricians and plumbers and civil engineers, including those who work with hi-tech and green construction - interplays of building structures with modern technologies (computers, energy conservation/creation, water recycling, materials...) Not just with housing and commercial development, but for infrastructure to - roads, bridges, plumbing lines and power transmission and sanitation.
So why not do both? Create a technical school for Olim. A school were immigrants come, and, in addition to Ulpan, get training on skillsets that are much needed in the Israeli economy.
This would be particularly helpful also in terms of developing a marketable product (expertise) for Israel to sell abroad.
On a side note, a revisiting of the Kibbutz model for immigrants might encourage aliyah. Anytime you build a new community, you create jobs because the community in of itself needs jobs. It needs managers and doctors and careworks and teachers and electricians and plumbers and trashmen and maintenance workers and shop owners, etc. Of course, in Israel, it also needs to be able to produce something to trade for the raw resources that Israel does not have in abundance - water and energy. (Although why Israel doesn't have, say, a light water nuclear power plant, and isn't far ahead of where it is in terms of alt. energy and even water desalinization is beyond me)
(ps.. having difficulty starting a thread, so put it in as close to a related one as I could find).

Israel definitely needs a program like that, and a national effort to concentrate aliyah efforts where it's guaranteed to work: creating great job opportunities by being a business friendly place. Low taxes, small bureaucracies, etc.
I've been reading how Israel is experiencing a lot of brain drain lately, especially among high scoring academics. This above all is probably Israel's biggest threat to long term prosperity. If the government doesn't do something to stop this it will seriously harm Israel's economy and technological advantage. And I hear it's partly caused by poorly funded education, meanwhile the welfare invalids are probably costing just as much cash to the state. They need to get their priorities straight.

more jews will make the aliyah when there is a strong leadership in israel with strong jewish morals. Until then why would they want to come in great numbers unless they have nothing to loose (i.e. french and pakistani jews...)
France deserves to loose its jews
Exactly. Why would we want to go live in a country ruled by corrupt cowards? To be forced to serve in an army where the gov't sends soldiers to die for their ridiculous worthless plans? To be used as pawns by that gov't and occasionally sent to rough up some fellow Jews? Do you think I want to go and "develop the Negev" so the next Israeli PM can suggest building a terror train running through it connecting Gaza to Judea? Would you want to live in that neighborhood?

Incentives are nice but I think more immigrants should work abroad while living in Israel. Thank you vonage.

Incentives? why should a jew need incentives to make Aliyah?
but here is an Incentive for you:
Israel is the world's happiest country (http://jews-news.blogspot.com/2008/10/why-israel-is-worlds-happiest-country.html)
An Asia Times article, explaining why Israel is the "world's happiest country," cites statistics showing that Israel leads the world in the national gap between fertility and suicide rates.
The author, identified only as Spengler, compiled and compared the fertility rates and suicide rates of 35 industrial countries, and found that Israelis "appear to love life and hate death more than any other nation."
Spengler explained that he compared "the proportion of people who choose to create new life, against the proportion who choose to destroy their own. Israel stands alone, positioned in the upper-left-hand-quadrant, or life-loving, portion of the chart.
"Israel's fertility rate (births per woman) is 2.77, according to Spengler, while its suicide rate is 6.2 per 100,000 people. In the U.S., however, the numbers are only 2.1 and 11, respectively, and in France they are 1.98 and 18. The gaps in the numbers of many of the other countries are on the chart are even wider.

I read somewhere that there are only some 200 Jews in Pakistan. They usually lie about their identity(they like to pass off as parsees). Also most of Jews in Pakistan are of Maratha origin.

sadly, historically speaking, the biggest incentive for Jews to make aliah was either anti-semitism or economic depression. and then Israel has to compete with the USA on the immigrants. The Zionist ideal (along with many other ideologies) ceased to be an attraction after WWII. Today it all about personal well being.

The Zionist ideal has been destroyed by the Israeli Arabists, plain and simple. People who are inspired by Zionism have no reason to come here to wallow in poverty amongst the arrogant Arabs, while being treated as second-class citizens.

The reasons that the Jewish people are heading home is Biblical. The reasons are many and all are in place by nothing more than the workings of the one true God. This was all prophisied and writen centuries ago.
The rest of the story will play out just as writen too. Nothing the governments do can stop it. No radical, jiad, virgin seeking muslim will do anything more than play into the hands and the great purpose of the creator.
It is going to be scary buy Evil and death will be defeated. God and his people will be glorified and like they say "they don't serve breakfast in HELL"
Good luck allah and mohamad. No breakfast for you.

I am a secular Jew and yet felt the draw to come to the holyland was something attainable and it's the best place to live as a free Jew regardless of the problems. I still work in the states or via the internet and if anyone can manage like me you can be very happy here. What's worked well is try looking for some far away communities a bit more upper scaled and you can do fine so long as you have a hebrew tutor to work with the kids (unless you got real little ones). I still make it by train to Tel Aviv sometimes to just splurge on a fancy restaurant and movie in a good movie theatre but having my own house like i did in the states beats living like sardines fighting traffic.

how do you know what's it like to live in Israel? did you live there? do you live there now?
I am native Israeli and live in Israel now. Living in Israel is most of the time quite pleasant, it can be sometimes hard, but I would never describe it as horrible.

I live a nice simple pleasant life and think Israel is a wonderful place to bring up a family. I rarely watch or listen to the news (that's what the internet's for). My wife supports Tzipi and I am for Bibi and whomever wins...wins. Life goes on and in two years from February we'll have another election no doubt.
I can see how people can be bent out of shape living anywhere including here. If you have a choice in where you choose to live here make it a good one like me.
The trains in Israel are perhaps the best place to get to know people. Such facinating helpful people with such interesting stories.

well since i am living at israel,i am thinking that israel, and u.s.a-(more los angels )is very near by way of living..
but to move from one country to other ,is not easy thinks to do,from many reason, and if you do not take this factor ,you will find many problem later.
*after all-israel is maybe uniqe place to live because all the history, but then again this is a regular country, and you still has to work and make your many, arise your children, and pay all the dam money tax(even the water bill ,get new tax).
of course with other leadersheep that thinks how to make this country more effective way, this country could easy to double the enter of tourist to here to israel, and by this creat so many new good jobs..or just by changing of some regulation could make double the number of the small business(by allow to open story at place that you can not open today, and by giving trade of people at places like bus stop and so on,that need today uniqe license,or you will easy get bills to pay, without this license ,and this is almost impassible to get this license, and the country of israel is willing to pay those people a national insurance money ,and not permission to sell where are not near story,to the public at not permanent place(this change can make so many new jobs)..
the goverment today at israel is knowing only to take money from the citizen, and i realy hope this goverment would been changing..

The ones I can't understand are the Persian (Iranian) Jews who refuse to leave. I know that leaving businesses, Jobs, homes etc is tough but sheeesh!!
I did see an Iranian Jew on TV was had a senoir post at the Iranian Museum and he kept referring to mohammerhead as "THE prophet- peace be upon him" ................BARF!!!!
If he's in danger of decapitation and HAS to say that he should move.
If he's just sucking up to those savages then I guess Israel can do without such kapos ( KADIMAS's full of them!)

Why did Indian Jews move to Israel ?

Perhaps because we are etho-civilizationally one people. An extended family. Why are people tribalist at all? Why do Pashtuns mostly live among themselves and not among the e.g., Sind?

http://www.jcpa.org/dje/articles2/india.htm
India is almost unique among countires of the world in its attitude towards its Jews. There is no known anti-Semititism in India nor are Jews looked upon as in any significant way different from the many Indian minority religions. The character of Indian culture -- its relative placidity, its acceptance of diversity, and its inherent communalism -- have given the Jews a sanctuary the likes of which has never been known in any of the countries of the western world. At the same time Indian Jewry has, perforce, acquired the characteristics of the Indian population in general. Their social patterns, psychological characteristics, and culture all bear the marks of the civilization within which they have been located for hundreds if not thousands of years.
=====
From the above link
In 1948, at the time of the founding of the State of Israel, India had a Jewish population of approximately 30,000. Since then some 20,000 have migrated to Israel and several thousand elsewhere, leaving a community of seven to eight thousand, according to the official estimates, most of Bene' Israel origin.

It adds trust me. You cant choose your relatives, you either shun them or join them. Indian Jews (a diverse community to begin with) are Jews by blood first and foremost. Meaning they are related to the rest of the Jews. Culturally, sure there are affiliations with host nations. e.g., I was born in the USSR. I straddle 4 or 5 cultures now. It comes and it goes. My family have lived in Europe for over 1000 years. I can take that experience and shed it in a day, because that was a costume not my core being.
3 generations more in Israel, and there wont be a majority that is one distinct sub-ethnicity. Those people will be a minority. 6 gens they wont exist at all.
My only beef [pun intended] is these guys havent opened more Indian restaurants in Israel.
This is a different case. :p
Its exactly the same from the perspective of ethnic affiliation. ;)
