This is like deja vu. Any moment now I expect Bush to once again express his "disappointment" in Arafat.

This article provides an interesting profile of Arafat, congenital liar:

Arafat has cancelled his speech in which he would supposedly call for the end of suicide attacks due to "technical reasons."

I see, he, well, wanted to call off "suicide bombing" attacks. What about shootings?

Shootings are most likely OK if it's children and women(especially pregnant)that are the target.

Arafat needs to prove himself if he really wants suicide bombings to end - it's not enough to say he does and then let the al-aqsa brigade blow up innocents. I accept it is hard for him to control Hamas, but I think he is closely linked enough to the Al-Aqsa brigade to stopp atrocities like this.

"The inaction taken by the EU States is somewhat reminiscent of actions taken by Britain, France and other European countries leading up to WW II. There was no clear consensus of what to do when Germany broke the Treaty it signed when it lost WW I."

I have to say I find that a bit far fetched - Arafat is not Hitler, he's not clever enough for a start.

Besides, there was initially a lot of sympathy for Hitler because the treaty of Versailles was too harsh in the first place - so people thought 'well, why shouldn't he remilitarise the Rhineland? It is part of germany etc'

But this is different, because the EU is not blind to the fact that Israel bears as much responsibilioty for the conflict as the Palestinians.

I firmly believe that the EU does not support Israel because it does not want to be supporting a state which oppresses a population.

By the same token, the EU needs to stop funding the PA until some form of regulations are imposed which forces Arafat to spend his mony on building an economy, and not on buying weaponry to wage war.

Maybe Arafat is much more clever and the EU leadership much more stupid than you think.
