I don't like avatars and animations and stuff like that much.
But smilies are okay, they are available to express emotions in this forum - they are even alternatively called emoticons, a synthesis of emotion and icon.
Popart maybe.
But what do you express with emoticons called rolleye, when the darn thing looks down - shame?? Or an unhappy thing looking beat up called embarrassment? The eek looks like granny without teeth! Is stick-out-tongue actually munching sweets? Frown and confused are twins.
The old ones were better.
And we urgently need a vomiting emoticon.

As for the rolling eyes one, it's akin to saying "oh, puh-leeze: give me a friggin' break already!"

I'd always read roll-eyes like Annaliese defined it.
If I wanted to imply sarcasm I'd use the tongue-out smiley.
