Authorities in Tajikistan begin razing country's only synagogue

By The Associated Press
24/02/2006

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan - Authorities in Tajikistan have started demolishing the country's only synagogue in order to make way for a new presidential residence, an official said Friday.

The century-old synagogue on government land in the ex-Soviet republic's capital Dushanbe will be completely torn down by June "as part of the plans to build a new presidential palace," said city administration spokesman Shavkat Saidov.

Last month, city authorities demolished the synagogue's ritual bathhouse, classroom and kosher butchery, the Norway-based international Forum 18 religious rights group said.

Tajikistan's Jewish community, mainly made up of Bukharan Jews, is mostly elderly and poor and cannot afford to build a new synagogue. About 280 Jews live in Dushanbe, of about 480 across the country.

Tajikistan’s Only Synagogue Saved in Nick of Time
Monday, March 20 2006

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan – A wondrous event has happened for Jews of Dushanbe. The Government of Tajikistan has decided to allow the historical Synagogue in Dushanbe to remain on the site where it has stood for the past 100 years.

Over the past few years, the international Jewish community has been alarmed by the tragic fate of the Dushanbe Synagogue, the only Synagogue in Tajikistan, which was slated for construction to make room for newer developments planned by the municipal government. In this regard, Chief Rabbi of Uzbekistan David Gurevich has paid several visits to Dushanbe in order to meet with foreign ambassadors, state officials and the city’s Mayor, Mahmadsaid Ubaidulayev.

Lev Leviev, the President of the Ohr Avner Foundation and of the Federation of Jewish Communities of the CIS, forwarded letters to Tajikistan President Emomali Rakhmonov, in which he expressed concern regarding the fate of the century-old Synagogue. In these messages, Mr. Leviev also expressed his certainty that the Government of Tajikistan, which has always been friendly towards the Jewish Diaspora, will allow this building, which is sacred to Jews of Dushanbe, to remain in its place.

This week’s development has shown that the efforts of the local Jewish community, as well as those taken by Jews throughout the world, have finally been successful.

“We are very happy that the government has decided to keep the Synagogue on its historical site,” expressed Rabbi Gurevich, who plans to appeal to world Jewry at the Sixth Bukharian Jewish Congress, which is to take place in the near future, regarding the required financial support to support the reconstruction of the Dushanbe Synagogue.

Rabbi Gurevich has assured local authorities that, in the case that the Synagogue is able to remain on its historical site, he will find the means to fit the building into the appearance of the ‘Palace of Nations’, which is being built in the city center.

NEW SYNAGOGUE WILL BE BUILT IN DUSHANBE, TAJIKISTAN

Tajikistan President Emomali Rakhmonov received Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EAJC) President Alexander Machkevitch in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan. During the meeting they discussed business and humanitarian co-operation.

Special attention was paid to the issue concerning the only synagogue in Tajikistan. According to many scandalous publications, it was decided to take down the above-mentioned synagogue without providing the Jewish community with another equal premise. Different organization including EAJC actively protested against such decision.

“Today we have completely settled all misunderstanding,”— Machkevitch said to journalists,— “President Rakhmonov has assured me, that he will provide the most appropriate plot of land in the centre of Dushanbe so that the elderly members of the community do not suffer while getting to outlying districts. EAJC together with Tajik sponsors will completely cover all the expenses connected with a new Jewish house building.”

EAJC President has mentioned a significant contribution made by President Rakhmonov to consolidation of interethnic and inter-religious peace in Tajikistan. “Under the President Rakhmonov direction, the country has managed to come out of a bloody conflict, and now demonstrates stability and develops the atmosphere of tolerance in this not simple region of the world”,— Machkevitch emphasized.

He also expressed confidence that in new conditions, the Jewish Community of Tajikistan would take more active part in the international inter-confessional dialogue, which is supported by EAJC.

“I hope that the new Dushanbe synagogue “Beit Rachel”, which I dedicate to my mother’s memory, shall be a capable centre of the Jewish community of Tajikistan humanitarian initiatives, which participation in the EAJC makes us really proud”,— concluded the Jewish leader of Euro-Asia.
