Stanford en route to Israel

High demand spurs prestigious U.S. university to run pilot study abroad program to let students complete some coursework in Israel; many U.S. study abroad programs were cancelled with outbreak of Intifada

Stanford University in California, one of the most prestigious universities in the world, is launching an experimental academic program by which its students can complete some of the coursework towards their degree in Israel.

Stanford University President, Prof. John L. Hennessy, unveiled the plan during a meeting earlier this week with the Israeli General Consul in San Francisco David Akov.

Hennessy said that there was a high demand among students to participate in study programs in Israel despite the U.S. State Department’s travel warnings against visiting the country due to the terror threat.

Hennessy noted the university was planning a pilot program based in northern Israel, combining the study of history, archeology, and current affairs. If the pilot is successful, Stanford will establish a permanent study program in Israel.

The university is currently seeking an Israeli academic institution to cooperate with in leading the program.

Until the breakout of the current Intifada, many U.S.-based universities recognized academic coursework from Israel. However, when the violence erupted in 2000, fearing they could be liable for students’ safety, most American institutions acted on the State Department’s warnings and cancelled study abroad programs to Israel.

In the U.S. News and World Report’s annual university rankings, Stanford was rated fifth in the country. The undergraduate department has approximately 10 percent Jewish enrollment.
