Turkey cancels USD 500 million deal with aircraft industry

Turkey scraps deal with Israel Aircraft Industries to upgrade aircraft in protest at Lebanon offensive
    Ariyeh Egozy

The war deals a severe blow to Israel Aircraft Industries: The Turkish government has canceled a deal to upgrade fighter jets worth USD 500 million because of the war in Lebanon.

The Israel Aircraft Industries fears that more deals could be canceled.

In 1997 Turkey signed an agreement with Israel for the upgrading of 54 Phantom aircraft at the cost of USD 1 billion.

The deal was concluded in 2003 and Turkey showed interest in upgrading another 50 Phantom jets for USD 500 million.

Turkey is weighing the purchase of new F-16 jets from the United States instead of upgrading its old fleet.

"They are old costumers, and the cancellation of the deal is a very bad sign," a senior military official said Monday.

The Israel Aircraft Industries refused to comment on the decision.

Turkey's interest in Israeli military products has long been considered as a "goldmine" in Israel.

"Turkey was conceived as a replacement for South Africa and Iran, who were big customers of Israeli weapons," he said.

Since the war in Lebanon opposition parties in Turkey have increased pressure on the government to cut military ties with Israel.

Israel is the world's 4th largest defence tech exporter. They will find another Turkey. Will Turkey find another Israel?

Israel are the only ones who can upgrade Phantoms so they could keep up with modern jets (the Phantom 2000 project)- but we just don't have much luck with them, it seems. First our own Phantom fleet is being grounded because Britain stops supplying parts, now Turkey scraps the deal.

It seems to me, though, that Lebanon was just an excuse for changing plans. Notice that they want to buy F16- warplanes of a different class than the Phantoms- rather than the F15 which would be a more suitable Phantom replacement.

It would have been a shame to lose Turkey as a customer, either way.

There are more than enough (several hundred) Phantoms in Davis-Monthan AFB (including engines, the J-79 isn't smokeless like the Rolls-Royce, but does the job) to supply Israel should it want them.

Bingo! F-4s are maintenance hogs, not as agile as F-16s, and are costly in parts and manpower to support. They are slower to combat turn, burn more fuel (JP-8 a isn't cheap) and have lower visibility. They were the most successful and versatile jet figher ever built, but their time is drawing to a close.

actually if you look closer you can see a few smart moves...

1..buying f-16s instead of upgrading phantoms wich are much older
2..showing arabs that turkey is by your side (as if they give a flying sheet about it)
3..cooling the public off to save their skin cos prime minister is a mullah sucker (most important)

isnt it logical buying leopard tanks instead of upgrading shermans? afterall when things get a little settled we can turn back to our old relationship... noone gets hurt... israel makes a little fuss about it and everybody thinks that our relationship severed...

as far as i know if you ask an arab about who he hates most first he will tell you israelis and secondly turks... so isralis and turks are tied by this hatred from their neighbours

Protesting Israel by buying American. Oh sure, the Arabs are going to think that's a real protest.

I will be contacting the Turkish Embassy tomorrow to let them know how disappointed I am, and as a result, will use all of the assets in my arsenal to ensure that the UN Human Rights Council, other intra-national bodies, and various major media outlets direct their focus on the Turkish crimes committed during the Armenian Genocide. I know for a fact that National Geographic, among others, has shown a strong interest in pursuing the event as a special, as well as the intense sensitivities of Turkey and its military with respect to it.

It won't take long for Ankara to see the light.

    Wrong Report

Dear friends, I want to inform you that the report of Yedioth Ahronot was denied by the Turkish defense authorities.

The deals will go ahead as planned, unfortunately. There is also another $500 million tank modernization project between Israel and Turkey. It is a bit disturbing see that Turkey and Israel got engaged into so much multi-dimensional relations.

    Ignorant

There are some ignorant people in here who claim that there is anti-Semitism in Turkey. It is absolutely baseless accusations. Turkey and Ottoman Empire has always been safe haven for the Jewish people in the world. Turkey is even safer than Israel, if you wish.

Jewish people are the wealthiest ones in Turkey and they control media and Turkish foreign policy.

Friends, instead of accusing Turkey with anti-Semitism, it will be much wiser for Israeli people to self question and try to understand why the world is turning back to Jews in the world.

Olmert’s government made a fatal mistake by destructing an entire country. Israeli planes are bombing civilians, killing innocents. How could reasonable people approve the Israeli massacres in Lebanon? People are sending peaceful warning to Israel which is now shaking its right to existence.

    Haven for the Jews
A great influx of Jews into Turkey and the Ottoman Empire, however, occurred during the reign of Mehmed's successor, Beyazid II (1481-1512), after the expulsion of the Jews from Spain and Portugal. The sultan recognized the advantage to his country of this accession of wealth and industry, and bade the Spanish fugitives welcome, issuing orders to his provincial governors to receive them hospitably. The sultan is said to have exclaimed thus at the Spanish monarch's lack of wisdom: "Ye call Ferdinand a wise king — he who makes his land poor and ours rich!" The Jews supplied a need in the Ottoman empire: the Muslim Turks were good soldiers, but they were largely uninterested in business enterprises due to Islamic limitations on commercial dealings; and accordingly left commercial occupations to members of minority religions. They also distrusted their Christian subjects, however, on account of their sympathies with foreign powers; hence the Jews, who had no such sympathies, soon became the business agents of the country. Coming as they did from the persecutions of Europe, Muslim Turkey seemed to them a haven of refuge.

    Dear rhodes...,

First of all, such language will not get us anywhere. I guess you have nothing to say but swear. However, I like to point out that swearing will do nothing but damage.

Secondly, you may ignore my comments, but we, the Turks have not ignored you in WWII whilst the rest of the world did.

And finally, an advice from a true humanist, your nation is fast gaining the hatred of rest of the world. I think its the time now that some of you start thinkg in a true nationalist fashion.

    Kind Regards,

    1. If the Turkish Government denies this articles accuracy why can't I find any contradiction to it on its own webpage? If I missed a section of the website could you just link it to me or direct me on where to find it?

    2. Historically Turkey like everyone else has had some anti-semitism, and today it is still somewhat infected.

    rhodescholar

Nice to see you recognize the Armenian Genocide, however don't think you can do terribly much to get it recognized all by yourself (I assume your post saying you could was a joke?)

The world has been turning its back to Jews for the last few thousand years and especially in the 20th century. So what else is new?

You mean agree to the "wiping" Israel off the map of the Earth? Yes, we will agree.
