WASHINGTON: The US presidential candidate Tom Tancredo said that in his opinion the sacred Muslim cities of Mecca and Madina should be attacked if America is attacked.

The presidential candidate belonging to the Republican Party said in a restaurant that the US should consider attack on the sacred Muslim cities of Mecca and Madina to save America from nuclear attacks.

He said that in case of nuclear attacks they would decide how to target Mecca and Madina. He said this is the only way to save the US from attacks and through which it can be secured.

It may be mentioned that this is not for the first time that any statement regarding attacks on the sacred cities of the Muslims has been issued from Tom Tancredo. Earlier in 2005 also, he said about attacks on Mecca and Madina.

Guy is obviusly very naive about his foreign policy. If the Islamic holy cities were to be attacked, that would spell a huge disaster. If I remember correctly, it was an off-hand comment made on some AM talk radio station some time ago. And he was talking about retaliation to a nuclear or similarly large scale attack on the U.S.

That begs the interesting question of how much destruction will cause people to relinquish their superstition and what, if any, specific destructive events would do the job.

The holiest institution of our nation, far more centralized and, probably more important to us (or minimally to the Priestly families at the time) than Mecca is to the Muslims. Certainly Medina... which more than anything has to do with their strong proscription against any whiff of idolatry. They have the Haj as a one time event during each year. The Temple operated 24/7/365. There was even a special religious economy built around the Temple. And at times it contended with the government in it's political power. There, also, weren't many secular Jews back then like there are both Muslims by birth and Jews today, that wouldn't give a hoot one way or another.

In the same vein, the Zoroastrians are still kicking, having all their sacred places decimated, having moved their ever burning flame to India. Hinduism is still around, even though the Moguls pretty much destroyed everything Hindu that they could at one time or another. The Buddhist greatest stronghold was what is today Pakistan and Afghanistan (remember the statues the Talies demolished a few years back?)... well even though they were always more diversified than centralized, most of their cultural assets went down the drain pretty much the same time as the Hindus. Both rebuilt readily. Finally, let us not forget Mao's Cultural Revolution, or Stalins destruction of most religious practice in the communist block... there are still Chinese that practice Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism and the rest... same with the Russians, religion is resurgent there.

There are plenty of precedents that will tell you that destroying religious sites will not end the religions/cultures associated with them.

Why don't you tone down the rhetoric, a bit? The world is not about to declare a Holy War against the Muslims. Are you such a bigot that you can't have a civil conversation with an Arab without calling them a "Mohammad"? Please tell me you are not an Israeli diplomat.

Peaceful Arab is exactly correct. What is now a fight against the extremists would quickly become a fight against ALL Muslims should Mecca and Medina be destroyed. If you think Israel would survive that, you are naive.

Population centers should be targeted in that case, since the enemy in a cultural war IS the population. If Israel gets nuked that greenlights obliterating every enemy you can reach with a warhead. The anger of people who no longer exist becomes irrelevant, and their demise an object lesson to the rest.

Second-strike is why Israel should build more submarines, and the missiles thereon should be able to reach Pakistan.
