    PM Olmert has prostate cancer

Ronny Sofer Latest Update: 10.29.07, 12:11 / Israel News

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced Monday that he has been diagnosed with stage T1 prostate cancer, which will not require radiation or chemotherapy. He added that he is expected to make a full recovery. Olmert clarified that he would continue to run the State's affairs.

In a special press conference, Olmert's physicians, Dr. Shlomo Segev and Dr. Kobi Ramon of the Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer, said that Olmert's tumor "is restricted to the prostate and is of no danger to him." They added that the tumor was discovered in a routine checkup following Olmert's return from Russia and that the prime minister was not exhibiting symptoms.

Olmert's doctors further said that at this time they have not determined whether or not he would have to undergo surgery to remove the tumor. Should he undergo any medical procedure under full anesthesia, he would be declared temporarily unable to fulfill his duties.

How do Israeli government succession rules work? If he is out of action who takes over?

First of all, Olmert is far from being out of action, as is exaplined in the news item.
When he's in hospital (he decided to undergo surgery), FM Livni will assume his responsibilities.

    Just so I understand.....

Olmert is the most unpopular PM Israel has ever had in its history.

He does not have anything close to one-third of the population strongly believing that he should stay in office until the next scheduled elections (and I am probably being very generous here).

He is being investigated by the police of the country he heads on charges of fraud, croneyism, other unsavory moral defects.

The Winograd Commission has been browbeaten (or something more unmentionable) into not directly recommending his resignation following his shameful conduct of the Second Lebanon War where Israel stopped fighting although not one of its objectives were met, and there was much loss of both Israeli civilian and military life.

There are many times when PM Olmert appears truly amoral about where his loyalties lie. And I know I am being generous in my choice of words here.

And now this pathetic excuse for an Israeli has prostate cancer.

AND IT IS STILL BUSINESS AS USUAL?????

The assurances of Olmert's doctors, if given to a patient himself or a patient's family, would be medically unethical. There is absolutely no such thing as 100% sure-cure in prostate cancer. This is just as ridiculous as the many political pronouncements of this man's regime. We are being lied to once again.

FELLOW ISRAELIS - THERE MUST BE NEW ELECTIONS NOW. THIS COUNTRY IS NOT BEING RUN BY THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE OF THE COUNTRY.

    wellofvow,

Prostate cancer is a pretty benign condition. About 30% of men in their 50s have it, most don't know about it and never will. This news a non-news item, they may have as well reported about him getting a cold.

The problem with Olmert's rule is not with him, but with the system that allows PMs who are elected by 25% of the voters (Kadima received 29 out 120 Knesset seats, that corresponds to 25% of the population) and don't allow the citizens to recall politicians. Your anger seems to be misplaced. This country is not ran, and almost never have been ran by the will of the people because the pseudo-democratic system that's in place here simply doesn't allot for it.

THIS GRANDMOTHER NEEDS NO LESSONS IN SUCKING EGGS.
    Are you an M.D.?
    Are you an MPH?
    Maybe an epidemiologist?
Or is your extensive knowledge on prostate cancer garnished from some internet sites, perhaps?

You missed my point - that His Olmertness should resign - and that yes, the "problem with Olmert" is that Olmert is the problem in that he refuses to acknowledge that he "leads" this country in name only.

And we all know your main agenda. Thanks anyhow.

M.D., and it is 100% irrelevant. His cancer is no reason to resign, and neither is anything else. He has no such obligation, and there is plenty of money to steal and business to do.
