Why does "Chock Full of Nuts" coffee have any nuts at all? Coffee's from beans not nuts.
Why is it you blow air in your dog's face it winces but they stick their heads out the car window?
I don't know if you are satisfied with the answers, but it usually means there are two highly desirable options for you, but you can't have them both at the same time. For instance, a guy has lots of gorgeous girlfriends -- a different one every night! However, one of those beautiful women wants to get married and start a family. He is in love with that one girlfriend and wants to get married. However, if he does, he can no longer have the girlfriends. In other words, he can't have everything he wants. Thus, he can't have his cake and eat it, too.
To elaborate a bit, let's say you have a beautifully decorated cake. A professional baker has decorated it into a piece of art. It's beautiful! And you love looking at it. However, you are also hungry for cake and want to cut the cake to eat it. But if you cut the cake all up, it will no longer be beautiful. Thus, you literally cannot have your beautiful cake and eat it, too!
Adara, the phrase is plainly semantically challenged![]()
To Have, is to Eat, To eat is to have. To consume is to posses something utterly; enough to stuff down ones gullet and then have seconds. I actually started this thread as a joke, but I stick by my assessment... it is a nonsensical phrase either way this cake gets divvied up.
As far as the guy with the multiple girlfriends goes.. obviously yours is not a description of the typical Jewish neurotic guy, who's lucky to have a girlfriend at all.OR one of our well peacocked arsim: & no marriage will stop the latter from pursuing yet more girlfriends, or cakes... er yeah cakes.
