Please don't hate us: UK ad campaign to target extremism

Prominent British Muslims are being recruited to star in a government-backed advertising campaign aimed at preventing people in Pakistan from engaging in extremist activity, the Guardian has learned.

The three-month public relations offensive, called I Am the West, consists of television commercials and high-profile events in regions such as Peshawar and Mirpur. It is being funded by the Foreign Office which is paying up to £400,000 for a pilot project.

Starring in the first three adverts are Sadiq Khan, the communities minister, Jehangir Malik, the UK manager of Islamic Relief, English cricketer Moeen Ali and the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Chaudry Abdul Rashid, who is from Mirpur. Mirpuris represent around 70% of Britain's Pakistani population.

According to a project synopsis, the target audience is 15-25-year-old males who are "less than well-educated and worldly wise, but potentially susceptible to extremist doctrines". If successful, it will be implemented in Egypt, Yemen and Indonesia.

The original proposal to the Foreign Office came from Deen International, an organisation set up specifically for the project and headed by Khurshid Ahmed, chair of the British Muslim Forum.

Last night Ahmed told the Guardian that the idea arose from the attempted terrorist attacks on Glasgow airport. "I did a number of visits to Pakistan to look at attitudes. Levels of hostility were increasing and there was lots of misunderstanding about how the situation was being described in the media out there."

The pilot involves nine 30-second television commercials, supported by radio commercials, scheduled across a number of channels, including PTV, Geo TV and Khyber, which is specific to the Peshwari area. They are due to appear on Pakistani TV screens next Monday.

The central theme of I Am the West is to assert that there is no contradiction in being a Muslim and being British. The synopsis says: "Muslims are equally proud of being both and certainly espouse the belief that violent extremism is not propagated in their name."

The campaign has four key aims: to ensure Pakistanis realise the west is not "anti-Islamic", that British society is not "anti-Islam", to demonstrate the extent to which Muslims are integrated into British society and to stimulate and facilitate "constructive debate" on the compatibility of liberal and Muslim values.

They Banned Geert Wilders and Moishe Feiglin. They have no problem with that insane loon Hamza screaming for the blood of Jews though. They also have no problem with that Rapper "Bounty Killer" who routinely calls for the murder of gays in all his shows.

Hey - My ancestors ran screaming from Europe a long time ago. Good for them.

Not to mention moslems who call for the implementation of sharia in the UK, where they have been partly successful.

Serves the freakin anti-semitic sobs right. This is payback for the millions the s-limeys slaughtered in the developing world during the colonial period while maintaining the facade of civility. This is payback for the blatant favoritism shown by the s-limeys for arabs in the mis-named palestine, giving the freakin arabs fort after fort (the taggerts) as they were withdrawing which we jews paid in blood to capture back, to open the road to jerusalem.

Up the freakin queen, lets see her in a burqa. that'll be the day i dance a jig.

No need to get so personal, Shimon.

There are 300,000 Jews who are also s-limeys.

May I pick your brain about this one please? Something along these lines, but hazardous to someones health perhaps?

Muslim medics refuse to roll up their sleeves in hygiene crackdown - because it's against their religion

    The Daily Mail (UK)

Health officials are having crisis talks with Muslim medical staff who have objected to hospital hygiene rules because of religious beliefs.

Medics in hospitals in at least three major English cities have refused to follow the regulations aimed at helping tackle superbugs because of their faith, it has been revealed.

Women medical students at Alder Hey children's hospital in Liverpool objected to rolling up their sleeves when washing their hands and removing arm coverings in theatre, claiming it is regarded as immodest.

Similar concerns were raised at Leicester University -and Sheffield University reported a case of a Muslim medic refusing to "scrub" because it left her forearms exposed.

Some students have said that they would prefer to quit the course rather than expose their arms, but hygiene experts said no exceptions should be made on religious grounds.

A Royal Liverpool hospital spokesman said they had experienced issues of Muslim staff not sanitising their forearms with alcohol gel although this had now been addressed.

Dr Steve Ryan, medical director at Alder Hey said that while the "bare below the elbows" dress code is a matter of patient safety, the trust would work with Muslim students to find a solution.

He said: "We specify bare below elbows, no wrist watches, nail varnish or false nails in clinical areas.

"Good hand hygiene is one of the most important and simplest actions we can take to prevent healthcare associated infections.

"A number of female Muslim students had approached the University of Liverpool to ask if we would provide facilities for them to change their outerwear and hijab for theatre scrubs.

Can understand your rant to a degree but like Sharona posted, it is a bit personal as I happen to be one of those jewish s-limeys and hold dual nationality as well.

I feel like throwing up when I watch Question Time. The British establishment stinks and as David Cameron so rightly pointed out Britain is a broken society. I pray that the US will pull out all forces from Europe, cancel the missile defence shield and let the Euros and Brits defend themselves instead of spitting on the hand that defends them.
