    Question Posting On Shabbat?

I always feel guilty posting on Shabbat or at least a little bit uneasy but I still do it! I wondered if we could run a little poll to see how other members feel about it?

The Poll is displayed above this post.

    I visit/don't post--though I have no issue with either!

Sorry but this is the kind of superstition I just find hilarious ..like friday 13th nonsense. Was the Law given with the intention to scare people away from God or to bring them closer? I hope you will not have a bad dream where you were typing on the Shabbat and being caught while someone chopped your hands off..

Thanks Mosche and Dayag....now I really feel guilty. In future I will try not to eat the forbidden fruit!

Sorry, Maven. I wasn't trying to make you feel guilty, just letting you know that you aren't alone.

Bless you Dayag, I should not have written that I was only joking. I know you did not want me to feel guilty of course. I admire anyone who respects the Shabbat. I will do better in future (I hope!)

Surely it depends on your upbringing somewhat.

What's the halacha about this anyway? As long as you keep the computer on over Shabbat, rather than switch it on and off, as I understand it, typing isn't the same as writing (in a halachic sense). So some Orthodox people would claim it breaks Shabbat, whilst others would claim it technically doesn't.

I rather think it probably breaks the spirit of Shabbat, although we don't discuss work on this forum, do we. But we do discuss "non-peaceful" things, so visiting here doesn't constitute Shabbat Oneg. Chatting to a relative or friend online on Shabbat would though, in my opinion. It's the next best thing to being with them physically and wishing them a Shabbat Shalom.

C'mon, how is inquisitive eyes any different from typing fingers? Reminds me of that muslim who raised the glass with a napkin and claimed he never touched the alcohol.
You gotta keep yourself small. Innocuous. Be the little guy...just look at me; underestimated from day one.

If the oven is on over shabbat, but no one touches it, it's fine... same with the computer. "Work" is wide open for interpretation though. Karaites cant flush the toilet. Halachic Rabbinical Jews cant (typically) tare toilet paper on shabbat but can in fact flush.

    Hey Maven,

Unlike Dayag--he's a bit soft--I meant to make you feel guilty! What I was actually thinking was that you are headed for the fire pits of hell! Moreover, there's a big skewer with your name on it, and a scarey fella in a red suit with a pointy tail and a pitch-fork is licking his chops waiting for a BBQ dinner!

You can keep it on but you can't touch it.

With that being said, how do Orthodox people cook/warm things up on Shabbat? I never understood how they do that.

Mosche baby, I may be worried about this dangerous world and having to cope with it every day. But as to the afterlife? Why, I'm friends of da boss!

Oh great! So even the afterlife is chock full of nepotism! Guess I better get ready for the skewers! To quote Garth Brooks, "I got friends in low places!"
