    Researching evil Sharon quote help!

Heard this today from an anti-semitic idiot. Apparently Sharon said this, and I'm trying to find out where it really came from. There has to be more to this, or something to put it into context.

Here's the quote: Sharon - ""Every time we do something you tell me America will do this and will do that . . . I want to tell you something very clear: Don't worry about American pressure on Israel. We, the Jewish people, control America, and the Americans know it."

    - Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, October 3, 2001.

The only sources I can find are basically from nazi websites. Any thoughts?

    Thanks folks!

Who do they attribute this to (hearing it)?

    Sharon NEVER said that!

Challenge the anti-Semite to prove otherwise! If you spend time researching quotes that were never made, you will find your time wasted! Similarly, when I am given a quote with an ellipsis, I assume that there is something that I'm not supposed to see--maybe I'm too much of a skeptic!

The quote is from a new book by Jeff Gates, one of these "blame Israel for everything" guys. His first chapter opens with the quote. I was actually trying to research Jeff Gates when I stumbled on this quote. Someone was trying to point out that the Israeli/evil zionist are controlling the world, using Jeff Gates as an example. I indulge these people because you can never have enough ammo against the anti semites.

Sometimes I do have to stop myself from indulging these people though. Ultimately, I'm not gonna change this person's mind, but it's good to know how the other side thinks.

Exactly. Did he hear Sharon say it? Probably not. The only sources I can locate for this quote are either nazi sites, or Anti Israel Muslim sites. I guess that in itself completely discredits all of this, Gates and his book.

I'm still curious how these quotes get generated. If Sharon didn't say that (I'm sure he didn't) then what did he say? Or which hate group orginally generated this quote.

We need a "snopes.com" specifically for anti Jewish rhetoric.

Sounds like yet another canard. There are a lot of things attributed to the sayings and doing of Jews.

That's the thing: you can't prove the nonexistence of something. And even if you can the morons will call you a liar.

Did Gates cite a source for the quote? As far as "how the other side thinks," I think one of the most effective ways to deal with them is a full on press! If anyone uses similar quotes, politely ask for a source! If they cite an intermediate source (eg. Gates), press for the original!

For what it's worth, Medio is right (i.e. you can't prove the negative); therefore, the burden of proof falls to the one citing the quote.

Went through this, myself, not too long ago. The quote is bogus. I'll try to locate the details, but, as I recall, it was a shady Arab "news service" that claimed they heard Sharon say he controlled America, but, that service was closed down by the American gov't for having terrorist connections. A couple of other news services picked up the bogus Sharon quote, but, they attribute the quote to the now-defunct alleged Arab "news" service, so, there's no way to corroborate the quote. How conveneint! The long and short of it is that the fake Sharon quote is evident by the fact that it went nowhere. No reliable, reputable news or media outlet ran the story. As I recall, the original fake quote was, "We control America" A later version was, "We, the Israelis, control America" Now, it's obvious that whoever concocted the quote decided to embellish it by adding "the Israelis" part for further impact, but, it would be absurd for Sharon to phrase a sentence like that because everyone in the room was supposed to have been Israeli.

Thanks! Sadly, Jeff Gates is a columnist for Huffington Post, call it what you will, but a lot of people read it, and I'm sure a lot of people consider it credible.

It was a fun journey fact checking this thing. I get into that kind of stuff. But it's sad at the same time to see so much Jew hatred, that is what it comes down to.

Well, he's peddling fabricated information. Arabs and just run-of-the-mill Israel haters routinely make up whacked quotes out of whole cloth and attribute them to Israeli figures. There are fake quotes attributed to Ben Gurion about how if he were an Arab, he'd never negotiate with Jews. It would be amusing were it not so sad and pitiful.

These lists of fabricated quotes are one of the main rhetorical weapons used by the Internet "foot soldiers" of the anti-Israel camp, not unlike the fake Talmud quotes lists disseminated by the ant-Semites who have never read the Talmud (oftentimes the same people).

I have long been contemplating writing a kind of guide on the most common anti-Israeli arguments, their fallacies and how to respond to them. I'm just not sure if anyone is interested.
