Germans returning to Khazakstan? That's something new. The Germans you are referring to are the Volga Germans all of whom were deported to Khazakstan at the start of WWII. The Volga Germans were the colonists invited to Russia from Cathrine's time. Anyways - most of these Germans were taken back to Germany from Khazakstan in the 90s.

back in 88 most French or Western European didn't have a personal computer either.

Neither did people in America. But these people did.

You are talking about East-West. A depressing movie. In that movie they showed former immigres returning after WWII for completely different reasons and to a country ruled by Stalin. Here we are talking about some Jews leaving for Moscow in the 1980s.

You have to be from "there" to understand
I know Mil, I was just saying your story reminded of that movie. Both had to do with Soviet propaganda and naive Westerners.

That's right, and now some are returning to Russia and Kasakhstan. They don't fit in well in Germany and are considered Russians rather than Germans. Some people who had been engeneers or doctors had to perform cleaning jobs in Germany.

Since 2003, approximat 3,000 Germans had returned to Kazakhstan from Germany, asking for Kazakh citizenship. The "Rebirth" organization, founded in 1989, handles cultural and community affairs of the ethnic German community.

Most German Kazakhs speak only Kazakh and Russian. In religion, most are Protestant Christians, while a few are descendants of converts to Sunni Islam.
