Is ISrael in danger of becoming a 3rd world country??

Im from Australia, and in JEwish gazettes here some people in the community have said israels greatest danger is not from terrorists or lack of water, but becoming a 3rd world country, is this true?? or do they just say that so jews in the west will give more money to israel??

The only danger of that becoming true is of course, if Arabs become the majority in Israel.

    well

Well the person who wrote that said the main cause is unemployment he said there are 1.1million unemployed in israel, yes what he DIDNT mention is that most of those are probably arab israelis(muslims)

I don't believe the number is so high. And yes those that are unemployed are most probably Arab.

Also, this high unemployment is due to the intifada, before it Israel had an economic growth rate of +6%, that's huge. Now its like -0.5%

As long as Jews are a majority, no.

I mean how much worse can it get? All of your neighbors boycotting you, no natural resources except for a few random minerals in pathetic quantities, no oil in any valuable amounts, overall extremely poor farming land, and yet despite all this Israel is a first world nation with a high tech economy after only around 80 years and 6 deadly wars!

Israel today put a halt on all new foreign workers and is taking steps to deport foreign workers who are visa violators. At the begining of the intifada Israel stopped new Palestinian work visas and cancelled most of the existing ones. To make up the shortage they brought in labor from Asia and Africa. But they turned a blind eye to visa violations. What's happened is that they wound up creating an underclass w/o no rights or healthcare benefits.

Now Israel wants to force the chronically unemployed Israelis into those jobs. The total is as high as 300,000 jobs The reason that Israelis don't want those jobs is that even the long term unemployed get benefits nearly as high as a full time minimum wage job. Israel has a very low participation of the total workforce in the active labor pool. All they have to do is enforce the laws they have now, restrict the number of foreign workers and cut back on overly generous benefits. It's about time.

PS - Palestinians take note. Your economic stabilty can no longer rely on cheap day labor in Israel. Those jobs are never coming back so you're going to have to figure out another way to bail yourselves out.

So how is it that israel is a first world country despite all what you wrote, yet countries that are full of oil eg.nigeria are 3rd world??
Is all because of stupid management and incredibly irresponsible politicians that are corrupt and couldnt care less about their own people. Thats the main reason i think. Not amercian imperialism, like the arabs woulds say.

Maybe they dont want the work because they would rather sit at home watching TV all day than do crappy menial work like slaving in fields all day, that peasant thai workers are used too.
Also here in australia, the unemployment benefit is about AUS$185/wk, yet the minimum wage is about AUS$450/wk.

OPEC countries will always be in the crapper. Always. Anyone can pick up an econ book and understand that a single product commodity economy will always fail. Actually Nigeria is the exception since it makes money from coffee, timber, cocoa too. Their problem is too many people.

It's the other OPEC countries that are in even deeper. Take a look at the CSIS.org report series on arab economies as well as the UNDP reports on arab development.

Yeah but the thing is that these Arab-OPEC nations just survive off the oil, whereas Israel would use it to further assist its other aspects of the economy. The Arab nations would be poor with or without the oil.

Well that's part of the problem. The unemployment benefits are high and Israelis don't want to do those menial jobs. Tough darts on them. Pick up a broom. The other aspect is that even with all sorts of illegal exploitation some foreign workers, feel they're better off then they are in their home country where there is zero chance to make a living.

That's more or less true. They are horribly mismanaged centrally planned economies that are bloated and inefficient. The government is the biggest part of the national economy. They are chronically in deficit and waste whatever benefit from oil prices they could get in useless solid gold public works projects and weapons purchases.

Thats where the Spanish made their mistakes, they were the richest empire in the world once with all their voyages and exploration, but all they wanted was GOLD, and when they found it they did nothing with it, they just kept it, and eventually lost it due to theft.
They didnt bother using it to invest in things to increase the value of it and create employment. Their gold just sat their in their vaults doing nothing and helping no one.
I also read now Saudi Arabia is actually investing some of its oil revenue in American shares, i have heard of one sheik or King Fahd i think, who owns like $3billion of Citigroup stock.

How is "third world country" being defined in this context?
