So how many of the people here: http://www.jinfo.org do you consider as "members of the tribe"? Note that they do not count religious affiliation at all, just having one Jewish parent is all it takes.
Or perhaps the definition of a Jew depends on the purpose it is used for. Of course anti-semites have their own.

    Anyways, I'm a non-Jewish Jew :P
In that case, could I possibly be a Jewish non Jew?

May I volunteer to be a non Jewish Jew?
Believing in the Bible, I tend to think that most of us are anyway, somewhere down the line.

    Re: What is a Jew?

Well, from my understanding the word Jew derives from the ancient Aramaic word Yehudah (Judah). And that originally the concept of a Jew referred to descendants of the tribe/line of Yehuda, and later to anyone who hailed from the Kingdom of Judah (which contained 3 tribes). And also, as newer religions and various converts joined, the term started to also refer to those who followed a particular religion, Judaism, which followed the laws of Moses.

    So, is this correct?

    EDIT:

I find it interesting that the holy city of the Jews originated from a completely different people. The Jebusites from around 3000 BCE. And these people lived in Jebus which later was known as Ur-Salem. And also is where the name Yerushalaym/Jerusalem are derived. Without the Jebusites, Jerusalem might not have even existed. I have thought about this before, and find the roots of the acient Semitic peoples of Canaan very interesting.

A Jew (properly - Israelite) is a descendant of Abraham, Itzhak and Jacob-Israel or a righteous convert, who keeps true to the Faith and Laws of the Holy Bible (Five Books of Moses), and to the Land of Israel. Else it is not a Jew, no matter what it chooses to call ITself.

"Yudah" itself is a corruption of of the Amorite "Ivri" or "Iuri".

    Re: What is a Jew?

Almost all knowledge concerning these very ancient times is very conjectural. However, what we know with a lot of confidence is that the number of Jews in the world during the first century more then doubled, from less than 5 million to around 10. This was due to conversion by Romans. At the peak, the Jews were about 18% of the population of the entire Roman empire.

Also, the idea that in the case of mixed parentage it is the mother that matters, originated only in the 3rd century. Before it was the other way around. In fact you can find in the Bible examples of Jewish heroes marrying non-Jewish women and producing with them legitimate Jewish offspring.

The words Yehudah (Judah) and Ivri (Hebrew) come from different Semitic roots.

Ivri comes from the root "עבר" which means "to cross over". Some believe the Hebrews got this name when they crossed over the Euphrates.

Yehudah comes from the root "ידה" which means "to praise". You can read about how Judah got this name in Genesis 29:35.

hiding behind lengthy rhetoric instead of a clear-cut definition is really the "iudish-galutian" tradition - cursed be it!
