'Gates lashed out, called Netanyahu an ungrateful ally'

Israel is America's ally, not its servant. On matters of Israeli security, Jerusalem should have the last word; at least if the U.S. was a true friend and ally.

Sounds like they're peeved that Netanyahu wouldn't freeze the settlements and take their word on what is best for Israel.

Former US defense secretary Robert Gates lashed out Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, calling him an ungrateful ally and blaming him for diplomatically isolating Israel and hurting American interests, according to a Tuesday column.

The criticism, which was revealed in a Bloomberg column by Jeffrey Goldberg, apparently peaked after Netanyahu met with US President Barack Obama last March, lecturing him on the Israeli security situation with a level of "impudence" that shocked many in the White House, including Secretary of State Hilary Clinton.

Gates felt that while the US had laid out "many steps" to "guarantee Israel's security - access to top- quality weapons, assistance developing missile-defense systems and high-level intelligence sharing," the US received little in return, "particularly in regards to the peace process," the column said...

I have been saying for a while now that US aid (financial) to Israel needs to stop for BOTH our sakes. I appreciate America as an ally, but it is time for America to stop aid not only to Israel, but to all our neighbors as well. Let America stick up for us at the UN, but it is time for them to look inside their own home and get themselves out of debt and it is time for our leaders to be more self reliant. We cannot expect any American president to be more Zionist than our own leaders.

So....Gates is a lobbyist for the Arabs now? Wouldn't shock me, as most ex senior officials are.
