In Turkey the murder rate of women increased by 1,400 percent between 2002 and 2009, the last date for which data is available. The statistic was revealed by the country's justice minister, in response to a parliamentary question. The revelation shocked the country and has put a spotlight on the government's record on women's rights, which could have implications for its European Union bid.



A recent Turkish news report focused on the murder of a woman in the streets of Istanbul. The mother of four was gunned down in the streets in broad daylight. Her husband was arrested. The news report's headline was "Another Murder of A Woman." That's because such events have become almost a daily occurance.

According to the Turkish Justice Ministry, in seven years the rate of women murdered has jumped 1,400 percent. In 2002, 66 women were murdered, in the first seven months of 2009 the number stood at 953. The shocking increase has made front page news; one newspaper described it as Turkey's shame. On the streets of Istanbul there is shock and resignation.

Soon though that rate will drop to zero as the Islamists determine that women are no longer human beings but chattel property.

I was under the impression that it was already the case. Mutilation of baby girls genitalia, execution for being a rape victim, denial of driving licenses, no legal recourse for domestic violence or for victims of honor killings, enforced wearing of a burqua etc.etc.
I'm confounded by the western women who use their freedom and liberty to vehemently support the regimes that deny the same freedoms to their sisters.
I suppose that if Turkey can't join Europe then Europe will join Turkey as it seems to be heading that way.

Not a fair post. 13 year old girls getting married? That's nonsense, perhaps it was done centuries ago, but this is 2012, and is NOT supported by Kurds. Maybe some still think like this as if they were in the Ottoman Empire era, but truly they're sick, and they do not represent the Kurds.
I haven't actually heard about Kurds marrying at a young age in the 21st century, maybe you're thinking about the crazy Arabs, lol. Yes, many families does have a lot of children, but actually that was older generations. Newer generations has only around 2-3 kids. You think henna is only a Kurdish tradition? It's also a Turkish tradition. Even some Jews did/do it.

I'm sorry if I sound too defensive of Kurds (as I am a Kurd myself), but I am not trying to defend those who committed those crimes. Even if they're Kurds, they deserve to be prosecuted.

But to generalise all Kurds... not fair.
