Well Hitler didn't term the word, although he did abuse it. Unfortunately this was done to such an extend that in Germany people are now sometimes overly careful already to the extend that it becomes insulting the other way around. When I brought my (Israeli-) wife to Germany a few years ago we both needed to get registered.
For me no problem, Name:____, Nationality: German, Faith: Lutheran.
Then my wife, Name:_____, Nationality: Israeli, Faith: she answered "Jewish"
The clerk's moth dropped, "Oh," he turns to his colleague, "How should I type this in here?"
My wife (who didn't speak German so well yet) thought he misunderstood and made an effort to say it without an accent.
I had my suspicion but I told him, "You put in Jewish."
But no. It was going on for some time before he ended up typing... now officially my wife's religion is "Israelite"
Her cousin also living in Germany (but he got registered in a big city, we first got registered in a small town) is (officially) Jewish.
"So piglet (that's what she calls her cousin) can be Jewish, but I have to be an Israelite?"
All I can say is sorry for our stupid bureaucrats.
