The Palestinian Authority has thanked the International Olympic Committee for refusing to hold a minute of silence at Friday’s opening ceremony in London to mark the 40th anniversary of the murder of 11 Israeli sportsmen at the 1972 Munich Games.

Jibril Rajoub, head of the Palestinian Football Federation, sent a letter to IOC chairman Jacques Rogge thanking him for his position, the PA’s official news agency, Wafa, reported.

“Sports is a bridge for love, connection and relaying peace between peoples.
It should not be a factor for separation and spreading racism between peoples,” Rajoub, a former PA security commander, wrote in his letter.

Wafa said that he sent the letter to the IOC chairman on Tuesday.

A senior PA official in Ramallah confirmed that Rajoub had sent the letter and said that the Palestinians were opposed to “Israel’s attempts to exploit the Olympic Games for propaganda purposes.”

A senior government official responded to the Palestinian letter by saying that “if the leadership of the PA is not willing to disassociate itself from its terrorist past, and is unwilling to see the Munich massacre as a brutal act of terrorism, then in Israeli eyes there will be big questions regarding their true commitment to peace and reconciliation.”

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon condemned the PA for terming as “racist” a moment of silence for the Israeli victims.

“No, the murder of Israelis because they are Israelis is racist, not the request to dignify and honor them,” Ayalon wrote on Facebook. “On the other hand, Palestinian Authority media refer to Munich terrorists as ‘stars’ whose path should be followed.”

“Now, more than ever, there needs to be a minute silence, not just to honor the eleven slain Israeli athletes but also to demonstrate opposition to those who laud murderers as heroes and call on others to follow suit.”

Herb Keinon and Jerusalem Post staff contributed to this report.
    This is my favorite:

NEWSFLASH, murdering 11 athletes in cold blood is not exploiting the Olympic Games for propaganda purposes?!?!

They and their apologists live in an upside down world. In that world ...

... the murder of Israeli olymic athletes, during the olympics, is an act of heroism and a source of pride.

... The elimination of the criminals who perpetrated the atrocity, is the crime ...

... the attempt to create a memorial for the murdered Israeli athletes is "a political exploitation of the olympics" ...

... the murder of the Israeli olympic competitors during the olympics was not an exploitation of the olympics ...

    Go figure ...

what i find amazing and absolutey hipocritical is why is there a palestine team on the olympics, when palestine dosent even exist as a country, shouldnt they be competing under the
stateless team banner, and if they allow palestine, why dont the iOC allow south sudan to compete, isnt south sudan more of a country than palestine?

Kudos to the Italian Olympic team.

The Italian delegation to the 2012 London Olympiad made an emotional gesture at the Olympic village on Sunday by holding a minute of silence together with a number of Israeli representatives for the 11 victims of the 1972 Munich massacre

I hope the Italians will have great success in the olympic competition. They are a decent people.

    Well done EASY JET!!!

On Thursday's flight from Luton, England to Tel Aviv, the pilot came on the intercom and informed the passengers that the crew will be observing a minute of silence as they fly over Munich and he invited the passengers to join them in remembering the Israeli sportsmen who were murdered there at the Olympic Games 40 years ago.

I guess in a way they are not. They are Italian citizens, that's fact. But they are not true Italian stock are they? They are descendants of the Judean tribes who were exiled by the Romans from Judea, a place that the same Romans renamed as Palestine.

In any case, is the glass half full or half empty? It still leaves 70% other Italians who don't consider Italian Jews as outsiders. So the glass is more than half full isn't it?

Sorry, Jerichomissile, but I am a cynic about matters such as this. I accept how things are. But it still does not negate the good things that the Italian people did in recent history even in WW2. They certainly behaved better than many other nations even if they were not perfect. But you know what? Those were very hard times and not everyone is a hero. Hey, we are no different in that regard from anyone else. Not all of us are heroes either.

Now a French swimmer has found another method of commemoration. Fabien Gilot, a member of the gold medal-winning 4 x 100 team raised his arm in triumph to reveal a tattoo in Hebrew reading:אני כלום בלעדיהם - in English: I am nothing without them.

He explained that it was a tribute to his grandmother’s Jewish husband, Max Goldschmidt, an Auschwitz survivor and a huge influence on his life.

For what it is worth, I spent a several weeks backpacking through Italy when I was 18. Most of the Italians I met were very decent and the Jews I met were very Italian.
