Buying Israeli Products Versus Donating to Israeli Charities: Which is a More Effective Means of Supporting Israel for the Diaspora Communities?

This is a question that I have been throwing around in my mind over the last few weeks. I want to support Israel but the question becomes where is my money best spent – charitable donations or the purchase of Israeli goods?

A donation to an Israeli Charity moves funds quickly from the supporter to the issue / person / organization that is in need of a cash infusion. A lot of good is created through charitable donations. Problems can be addressed quickly and effectively. But at the same time that money dries up. It is targeted at whatever project it is destined for and no further wealth is generated. For Israel to be truly self-sufficient, it needs its commercial sector to become more competitive in the global marketplace.

Israel is a major player in certain sectors of the global economy – technological research and development is the perfect example. But there are many areas of the global marketplace where Israel simply doesn’t have the domestic demand nor the economies of scale to compete with companies from other countries. This is true for all nations and I am not saying that Israel will ever be able to compete strongly in every market. But what I will say is that going out of your way to buy Israeli products helps the nation work towards the competitive advantage necessary for the economy to grow.

Buying Israeli products, where possible, supports the Israeli economy in a fundamental way. Giving Israeli businesses the opportunity to grow and innovate will make the Israeli economy stronger, more diversified and more capable of weathering the economic storms that will continue to befall the global economy. Building up Israeli companies, by buying their goods, and allowing them to gain the economies of scale necessary to compete on a level playing field with corporations of other nations (and capture market share) will allow the Israeli economy to grow organically over the long-term. This organic growth is the best way forward for Israel. The Diaspora is a small community – our charitable dollars only go so far. Buying Israeli products has incremental benefits that are intangible. Through the purchase of Israeli goods, we are not just giving $100 in support. We are giving Israeli entrepreneurs’ $100 to invest in their own companies and turn into much more wealth which they can direct towards making Israel an even greater country...........
