I does warm my heart to discover yet again how deep and personal is the fellowship among our civilizations.
However I do understant the mutual needs that bring us togathers, our mutual enemies: the Islamist terrorists. Israel as an example to relatively rich, techonologicly advanced western country, has the yearly budget of about 10 bn $US.
Intel invested similar sum, only to develop its new technology. Same goes for new medical drugs, new engines, new better cars, ships, bridges ect...
Airbus, is going to invest 24bn $US on a new military transport plane. Such sums are well beyoned the economical power of many countries, combined. The next SARS or HIV vacsine will be developed by an international corporation, not a goverment. No goverment could afford to ivest that much.

Isaiah, you are underestimating - and overestimating - US, at the same time. As world powers go, US is by far the most benevolent of any, that historically had even a fraction of the reach US has. On the other hand, "super power" does not mean "supernatural power": i.e. Americans have the same limitations on individual and collective level, as other people.
It is a fact of life that humans have lived under tyrannical regimes for most of our history, by far. Democracy - true democracy - is a relatively new phenomenon, gradually arrived at through quite a bit of bloodshed.
I don't really see Americans and Europeans as radically different from each other, although the expanse of the ocean and "starting clean" have both contributed to an element of detachment in world affairs, and very limited role in imperialism has dulled the sense of "white man's burden" in American society. However, this division is really rather artificial - not unlike that between the Ashkenazim and Sephardim Jews, - where the rest of the world doesn't view the two groups as really distinct.
