Request for vote / ideas : creating a thread where people would introduce themselves

I would like to suggest an idea and have your opinion upon it.

Browsing through old threads, I have seen people introduce themselves (Andak, Am Yisrael) and the thread was really wonderful (http://www.israelforum.com/board/sho...ht=introducing). Basically I am convinced it can only be a good thing.

So what about a thread dedicated to people introducing themselves ?

The mood on the forum has become more tense lately, but it could be a nice step to make it better.

    ====================

What do you think ? Maybe you can just answer "yes" or "no" and we would decide according to the majority.

    ====================

    PS :
I was wondering as well if a special place could be found for the thread.
I even though it would be nice to have a system where people can only "speak" on the forums after they introduce themselves properly, but this is probably too much.

Yehudi of course its a good thing to understand other peoples religion/culture/race. The reason I made that thread was because I thought it would be a good idea to have a different athmosphere of posting, rather than the more popular tit-for-tat conversations. It was kind of an experiment to see how people would react. It would be nice to see more threads like that one but it does not need to be in form of a personal experience. Looking back on it it seems that I boasted about a bit and it looks like a story rather than a more "usual" thread. I also think forum members should decide whether or not they wish to release personal information on a public website.

    I agree.

I do not mean it to be a thread that can allow categorizing people into categories (jew/non-jew), but rather a place where one can say what one wants about himself that he wants to be known so that we understand him better...

Maybe something optimistic would be nice too (insisting on one's hopes rather than hatred of this or that).

It sounds like a wonderful idea. I vote yes. However, regardless of that, I would still prefer if you could send me a private message answering the previous question mentioned in the last thread.

IMHO, this should be an optional part of one's profile, visible to others upon a click on the icon. I have no idea how hard it is to introduce additional field in there, it just seems more logical place than another discussion thread.

Please answer this thread within 24 hours

I propose we say the "vote is over after that"

If it becomes "mandatory" to introduce one's self before being allowed to post, then my vote is "No".

I positively detest a mandatory introduction at forums because instead of getting to know people gradually through their words, their thoughts and feelings, a "laundry list" of characteristics that people think the forum requires begins to appear in each introduction, which may or may not be part of who the new person really is. Plus, I've seen small people get their small feelings hurt because of not being enthusiastically welcomed by everyone after they post their intro.

A voluntary thread with introductions would get a "Yes" vote from me, provided it is understood that intros are voluntary, there are no set questions to answer, and everyone isn't expected to jump in with a welcoming response.

By the way, I have been quite comfortable (and thoroughly entertained at times!) getting to know the members and frequent posters here through their posts and frankly, was happy that I didn't have to come up with lot of boring talk about myself before being allowed to participate.

It is my Not So Humble Opinion that the admins and mods of this Forum are free to have and hold whatever opinions they choose, without obligation or accountability to the likes of me, who stumbled here, happily, by chance. After all, the name of the place is Israel Forum.

    'Nuff said.

I agree. I'd like to add that my yes vote is only if this is optional. Should this be a mandatory thing, or even a thing where people are pushed to do where they don't want to, I don't support it.

    Lion, Donna :
Given the moderators total silence. I do not think it could ever become mandatory anyway.

I am myself split about this idea because I do not want it to become a source of racism and conductive of preconceived ideas on people.
    I see enough of anti-french anti-german anti-european or anti-arab racism here already.

So we shall be clear about not requesting geographical/racial information and that anyone can edit his post anytime. I think information that can help locate people should be somewhat avoided, it is not what is the most interesting/constructive anyway.

Nonetheless I think, it it very interesting to get to know each other better.
Especially expressing our hopes for the future.
If I remember well Bibi said something about hope being the source of terrorism. His idea that you must destroy hope in the minds of men is a monstruosity.

    Good points, Donna.

I would like to add that I have often been "amused" when new members begin a "campaign" to change the board before they have even registered much of a presence here.

Please provide evidence that Benjamin Netanyahu said we should "destroy hope in the minds of men."

I know he has pointed out that terrorists commit mass murder not out of desperation, but because they are hopeful this evil will work. Therefore, we should disabuse them of any hope that Israel will be destroyed by terrorism.

The only "monstrosity" I see here is you falsely attributing out-of-character remarks to someone who is not here to defend himself.

Indeed. It appears, my friend, that you have misunderstood Bibi. What was meant was not to destroy hope but to destroy the hope of terrorism succeeding.

mmm I read this "terrorism comes from hope" thing on this very forum. However I'm more than willing to put that quote back into context and find this "destroy hope" is completely wrong.

    Yeah http://ww2.moriel.org:8004/israel/ne..._to_senate.htm I withdraw that then !
