    A nation of high achievers

Why won't Israelis invent cheap alternative energy source. That'd be _very_ useful! -hs

[Freeman Center Note: Imagine what the high achievers would do if a terrorist state was on the border with Tel Aviv.]

[Janet Lehr Note: Imagine what we could do if we were at peace with our neighbors!]

ISRAEL: A nation of high achievers

Israel, the 100th smallest country, with less than /1,000th
of the world's population, can make claim to the following accomplishments.

Israel has the highest ratio of university degrees to the
    population in the world.

Israel produces more scientific papers per capita than any
other nation by a large margin - 109 per 10,000 people - as well as one of the highest per capita rates of patents filed.

In proportion to its population, Israel has the largest number of startup companies in the world. In absolute terms, Israel has the
largest number of startup companies than any other country in the world, except the US.

Israel is ranked #2 in the world for venture capital funds right ehind the U.S.

Outside the United States and Canada, Israel has the largest number of NASDAQ listed companies.

Israel has the highest average living standards in the Middle East. The per capita income in 2000 was over $17,500, exceeding that of the UK.

With an aerial arsenal of over 250 F-16s, Israel has the largest fleet of the aircraft outside of the US.

Israel's $100 billion economy is larger than all of its immediate neighbors combined.

On a per capita basis, Israel has the largest number of biotech start-ups.

Twenty-four percent of Israel's workforce holds university
degrees - ranking third in the industrialized world, after the United States and Holland - and 12 percent hold advanced degrees.

Israel is the only liberal democracy in the Middle East.

In 1984 and 1991, Israel airlifted a total of 22,000 Ethiopian Jews at risk in Ethiopia to safety in Israel.

When Golda Meir was elected Prime Minister of Israel in 1969, she became only the world's second elected female leader in modern times.

When the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya was bombed in 1998, Israeli rescue teams were on the scene within a day - and saved three victims from the rubble.

Israel has the third highest rate of entrepreneurship - and the highest rate among women and among people over 55 - in the world.

Relative to its population, Israel is the largest immigrant-absorbing nation on earth. Immigrants come in search of democracy, religious freedom, and economic opportunity.

Israel was the first nation in the world to adopt the
Kimberly process, an international standard that certifies diamonds as "conflict free."

According to industry officials, Israel designed the airline industry's
most impenetrable flight security. U.S. officials now look to Israel for advice on how to handle airborne security threats.

Israel's Maccabi basketball team won the European championships in 2001.

Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers was produced by Haim Saban,
an Israeli whose family fled persecution in Egypt.

In 1991, during the Gulf War, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra played a concert wearing gas masks as scud missiles fired by Saddam Hussein fell on Tel Aviv.

Israel has the world's second highest per capita of new books published.

Israel is the only country in the world that entered the
21st century with a net gain in its number of trees.

Israel has more museums per capita than any other country.

Israel has two official languages: Hebrew and Arabic.

    Medicine:
Israeli scientists developed the first fully computerized, no-radiation, diagnostic instrumentation for breast cancer.

An Israeli company developed a computerized system for
ensuring proper administration of medications, thus removing human error from medical treatment. Every year in U.S. hospitals 7,000 patients die from treatment mistakes.

Israel's Givun imaging developed the first ingestible video camera, so small it fits inside a pill. Used the view the small intestine from the inside, the camera helps doctors diagnose cancer and digestive disorders.

Researchers in Israel developed a new device that directly
helps the heart pump blood, an innovation with the potential to save lives among those with congestive heart failure. The new device is synchronized with the heart's mechanical operations through a sophisticated system of sensors.

    Technology:
With more than 3,000 hi-tech companies and start-ups, Israel has the highest concentration of hi-tech companies in the world, apart from the Silicon Valley.

In response to serious water shortages, Israeli engineers and
agriculturalists developed a revolutionary drip irrigation system to minimize the amount of water used to grow crops.

Israel has the highest percentage in the world of home computers per capita.

Israel leads the world in the number of scientists and
technicians in the workforce, with 145 per 10,000 -- as opposed to 85 in the U.S., over 70 in Japan, and less than 60 in Germany. With over 25% of its work force employed in technical professions, Israel places first in this category as well.

The cell phone was developed in Israel by Motorola, which has its largest development center in Israel.

Most of the Windows NT operating system was developed by
    Microsoft-Israel.

The Pentium MMX Chip technology was designed in Israel at the Intel development center there.

Voice mail technology was developed in Israel.

Both Microsoft and Cisco built their only R&D facilities
    outside the US in Israel.

Four young Israelis developed the technology for AOL
    Instant Messenger in 1996.

A new acne treatment developed in Israel, the Clear Light
device, produces a high-intensity, ultraviolet-light-free, narrow-band blue light that causes acne bacteria to self-destruct -- all without damaging surroundings skin or tissue.

An Israeli company was the first to develop and install a large-scale solar-powered and fully functional electricity generating
plant, in southern California's Mojave Desert.

The first PC anti-virus software was developed in Israel in 1979.

We can certainly be proud of the accomplishments of this little, embattled country!

OTOH one of the 4 primary IBM R+D facilities is in Israel. The other 3 are Hawthorne (Watson), Santa Clara and Zurich.

Akami's technical founder was an Israeli (killed aboard one of the planes on 9-11).

Israel is the world's leader in UAV's (umanned aerial vehicles).

Two front line American cruise missiles are Israeli designs

True it is that Israel is very advanced in science , technology , health and many other things but.... I'm here right now in Israel and I'm a bit saddened by how people are... and a bit of how the country is but somehow I still love it... The roads are dangerous, people drive like idiots and get mad quickly... A big resume of how people here are... Non patient... Non mannered... Non respectful... Not everyone but many... and look we got hoes here, we got drug problems here , we have every problem the world hasd but even more exagerated... We need some kind of Guiliani to come save this country because I hate the corruption... it corrupts me and makes me like Israel less but I still like it for some reason... Why is it so bad here? Has anyone else been here and noticed this ??

I completely agree with your assessment, esp. in traffic dept!
I experience the same feelings every time I visit. I cringe when I see leftovers of socialism (don't tell Takeo, he might start liking Israel for a wrong reason). I feel bad when they don't recycle. Corruption, bureucratism, cronyism...

Let's see if I can come up with excuses.
    1. High achievements come with a price tag. You know, the geniuses frequently are moody, extravagant, or plain crazy.

    2. When you care about something and look up close, you notice more details and want to improve what's wrong.

    3. Wars change priorities.

But rather than looking for excuses, I'd fix what's broken. No one can discount the deepest love of Israelis to Eretz Israel. This includes olim hadashim or olim to be.

that's precisely why many people leave israel. it doesn't mean they hate israel. they just had enough of all the problems there. it doesn't mean that they are not proud to be israelis

look at europe, for instance. when people look for new opportunities, career wise or just going out there to experience something different, they can easily move around the continent since europe has become so "connected" in recent years. so moving to another country isn't being looked upon as a big deal

same thing in america. many americans move, for example, to canada for various reasons

but in israel, whenever israelis choose to live abroad, they are view as "traitors" so-to-speak, or as second class people in israel. it's a darn shame that jews leave the jewish homeland for other countries. for some people, they just can't take it any more. the politics, the danger, the arrogance. they want to have a better life for their children instead of shipping them off to the army at 18 and hope that they don't get killed by a 15 year-old arab thug

That's why olim move back you mean... Wait am I considered an ''ole'' if I was born in Israel and stayed till the age of 4 and from 4 to 17 I was in canada? A Sabra is someone who is born in Israel... people here don't know that? they keep on telling me naah ur not a sabra then I tell them I was born here damn it lol ...Anyways if they want some olim why don't they show a better attitude we aren't arabs why do they show such attitude... all the arrogance... just 50 years back our people were in camps and now because we have our own country they all turn arrogant it's okay but the only problem is ... they piss off their own people...If the Jews are so smart then why don't they
    1. Have some class for G's sake
    2. Build their economy like the americans instead of builing it mafia style... The thing that irritates me most is Jews murdering Jews... but I understand because we are all humans and we all snap at one point, even the most religious man or woman could... but HERE... they snap for no reason... that is the problem...

Intel MMX technology was invented in its labs in Haifa, Israel

Instant online messaging was invented by ICQ, Israel.

The first (and only) feather-less chicken was invented in Wiesmann inst. in Israel.

Israel has the highest ratio of Physicians per capita in the world (1/400)

Israel has one of the most liberal approaches to parenthood: On one hand, abortions are legal and monitored. otoh, single motherhood by choice (through sperm banks) is also legal and even aided by the state.

Thanks, that is a very informative site.

I am very impressed at what Israelis and Jewish people around the world have achieved. Here in Australia, 4 out of the 6 richest people are Jewish. The 3rd richest person (was 2nd richest last year) "Frank Lowy" fought for Israel in its battle to get the British to grant the Jewish people a state in the mandate of Palestine. Now he owns Westfield shopping centre complexes in Australia and America.

Second richest is Richard Pratt (manufactures cardboard boxes), fourth richest is John Gandel (owns shopping centres and donates a lot of money to the Sharon Government), and sixth richest is Harry Triguboff (owns lots of real estate).

The cell phone was developed in Israel by Motorola, which has its largest development center in Israel.

The first Cell phone - the infamous MicroTech - was developed in Shaumburg, Illinois in the late 70s. I worked for Motorola. As far as the biggest development center in Israel - common!!!!!!! Though Motorola does have extensive research and development facilities in Israel - I've traveled there. There is a huge Motorola facility around Haifa.

Most of the Windows NT operating system was developed by
    Microsoft-Israel.

Ah - um- um..... No comment. I hate Windows in general.

The Pentium MMX Chip technology was designed in Israel at the Intel development center there.

    That's partially true.

    1. Microsoft Development center in Israel is very small and relatively recent. To this date, all they do is migrate MS products to Hebrew. Allmost all Microsoft development is done at Richmond. Windows NT started as "Chicago project" which also occured at Richmond...

    2. Hate or Love Windows, there is no alternative for the home consumer. Also, its worth mentioning that Microsoft is one of the very few software vendors who releases customized versions of its products in local language. Apple, Netscape, Adobe etc. for instance, seem to oblivient to the existence of anyone outide US and Europe.
