    Iraq: Judenfrei

Iraq, for the first time in 50 years, has become the first country to be completely cleansed of Jews. Oh yeah, I forgot, Saudi Arabia was the first one.

    From news article:

Six of Iraq's last Jews flown to Israel from Baghdad

    By Amiram Barkat, Haaretz Correspondent

Six elderly Jews from Iraq, from among the last
remaining Jews in the country, landed Friday
evening in Israel on a direct flight from Baghdad.

I don't know how to think: Is it good that these people went to Israel or that Iraq is now a Jew-free country?

Pretty damned amazing to have a country the size of Iraq with a Jewish population so small they could be counted using the fingers and toes of two people, with digits left over.

I do not know off hand what the Jewish population of Iraq was in former days, but I believe it was substantial.

The Jews have been there since the first exile, back when it was called Babylon. Many of the Jews stayed there even though they were later allowed to return to Judea. It's very sad, actually.

Would it be better if they were killed in Iraq? I don’t think so!!! I believe that they did the right thing by leaving.

and this is not just short-term : the 150.000 military and rebuidling experts are meant to spend 2 to 4 years in, this means 22 semi-permanent bases

But the US plan on staying very very long after that through, in particular with very big facilities often more than 50 years old like those in Germany, Japan, south korea, greece, spain .....

At the moment there are three big permanent military bases planned and already in progress.

And note as well that there are plenty of civilian businessmen, engineers, professors... that could settle and stay on a permanent basis with their families and the services they will need. Someone on this forum said he would open a kosher deli in Baghdad... a big exagerated today but who knows...

// edit : guess who wanted to open a Kosher deli in Bagdhad : medio ! //

I probably already answered that question. If you search my post for the name "hirschman" you'll find my opinion on that.

After giving it a second though I think this is not the real question you are asking.
    - Either I should interpret it as "get lost, you're not singing the tune what I want to hear and I don't like that". L@mplighter's post I think probably means the same thing.
    - or it can be some second-degree humor...

    - if it's the former, just use 'ignore' with me and around four people here. You'll get just the place you are looking for.
    - if it's the latter,

    //edit : URL for Comm//

No, you didn't answer my question and I would appreciate a real response. What is the motivation for your posts in this thread?

That's why I said "for the first time in 50 years".
Estonia, at the moment, has a substantial Jewish population - most of them are Russian-speaking.

(note to myself: do not give L@mplighter my particulars).

Anyway, like it or not, Lamp, I claim the invasion of Iraq has exactly the opposite effect of making it "Judenfrei".

And if in the long to medium term the effect of the taking over of Iraq and sacking Saddam is to open Iraq to the world it will be all the better.

If... if not, if shiites take power, if the country is torn by an endless civil war .... no-one will want to live here anyway.
