true the bolsheviks were bloodthirsty and they were an important part of the forming of the Soviet union. however around the same time that Nikita Sergevich came to power living conditions were comfortable for most people. and by the late 80's before Regan families could afford to take vacation every year (Crimea, Soche, black sea coasts) and life was not more or less pretty good. After the wall came down however criminals who wouldn’t dare show there face under penalty of soviet justice came out of every corner. the worst of these were the evil oligarches. Berozhovsky was the worst. while they were getting rich of the money owed to millions of workers. and at the same time a CIA agent was running the country(yeltsin).

However now things are looking up. Putin has come to power and is rapidly modernizing the nation. Tourism is at a high. the military is in a process of modernization and will take a few years to get to normal. Chechnia is under control and the army has pacified the extremist elements for the most part except the filthy Jordanian mercs that come that way every once in a while. Putin needs to deal with the oligarchs now. Some of them have already ran in exile like the cowards they are to your nation Chap along with chechen terrorist leaders. I suggest anyone in the nation found of fraud, racketeering, or extortion be forced to work the rest of their pitiful lives digging holes in Siberia. Siberia need to be more developed it has huge amounts of untapped natural resources(oil, gas, diamonds, coal, etc). After putin has gone his minister Ivanov will take the presidency. which is good, he will continue were putin left off. Russia now needs to stop looking west, Europe has become irrelevant and will become an Islamic Caliphate in 50 years. We must look twords the east and develop better relation with India, Japan, China. we should also make better economic ties the Americas. Chap if you have not heard Russia signed along with America a treaty to decrease nuclear arms a few years ago. however we must keep enough so we don’t decide to get "liberated" again. it has happened to many times before. If things go smoothly Russia will take its rightful place as Superpower again. right now we are demi-superpower.

Calarfornia is not richer than China. China has the world's second largest GDP.
Although, India does have a problem of poverty but India will be poverty free in 2015 with the same growth rate.
The population of India will decrease by a great margin in 2025 and with this India will have a very high per capita.
India will become a developed state in 2020 with the same growth rate.

    To BritishChap,
Russia is the world's second most infuential country. Although It does not have the same influence as that of USA. Russia has a very strong influence over India's foriegn policy and defence while it also has a strong influence of the members of former Soviet UnionIt also influences China's defence.

As far as total GDP goes the CIA list the following for the major world economies.

    USA $10.082 trillion
    China $6 trillion
    Japan $3.55 trillion
    India $2.66 trillion
    Germany $2.184 trillion
    France $1.54 trillion
    United Kingdom $1.52 trillion
    Italy $1.438 trillion
    Brazil $1.34 trillion
    Russia $1.27 trillion

However when you look at the per capita figures which give an indication of how far that GDP has to go to provide for people and how much is left to exert power through overseas initatives the picture is rather different.

    USA $36,300
    Japan $28,000
    Germany $26,600
    France $25,700
    United Kingdom $25,300
    Italy $25,000
    Russia $8,800
    Brazil $7,400
    China $4,600
    India $2,540

It is due to the large population of India And China that India and China have such a low per capita.
If USA or Britain had to sustain such a population than they will know how hard it is to remove poverty of a single person.

I understand that Russian positions are taken into account by India however I didn't think that they had any great power over India. How do they exercise this power? Do they provide a lot of loans and military aid?

In terms of trade these are the major parters for Russia.

    Exports

    Germany 9.3%, US 8.3%, Italy 7.5%, China 5.6%, Belarus 5.2%, Ukraine 5.2% (2001)

    Imports

    Germany 13.2%, Belarus 9.6%, Ukraine 9.3%, US 7.6%, Kazakhstan 4.8%, Italy 4.1% (2001)

These are the major trade partners for India

    Exports

    US 20.9%, UK 5.2%, Germany 4.3%, Japan 4.0%, Benelux 3.3% (2000)

    Imports

    UK 6.3%, US 6.0%, Belgium 5.7%, Japan 3.5%, Germany 3.5% (2000)

These figures seem to discount the possibility of Russia exerting influence as a major trading partner for India.

If there are natural resources which can contribute to the Russian economy that would certainly help build Russia's economy back up to a better state of affairs. As far as Chechnya is concerned, I think to call the situation "under control" is a little optomistic. I understand that considerable progress has been made on the political side but on the ground the situation seems extremely out of control.

As for Europe..much as we have our differences with the French over certain issues I think anyone who writes of Europe is being unwise. Europe certainly faces challenges this century and I personally am not a fan of the proposed federal apporach but whatever happens Europe will continue to co-operate economically.

As to Europe becoming an islamic state, lol..I thought we were having a serious discussion here? We have a few Muslims, far less than Russia I might add, and there are some that rant on about Khalifates and such like. With the issue of terrorism being high profile in Britain we now have powerful laws to deport people who are a threat to national security and lock up without charge people who speak in support of terrorism so the more outspoken ones are currently locked up in HMP Belmarsh - which sends a message to their followers - "if you want to live under the "Laws of Islam" then find yourself a new country, because it will not be tollerated in Britain". Peaceful Muslims who want to integrate into European societies are not a problem, so I wouldn't be too concerned about Europe turning into a Muslim state

    Angry From A Indian

Russia is the largest defence exporter and spare part supplier to India.
Recently, talks have been going on between India and Russia on the sale of an aircraft carrier and other defence equipment at the cost of $3 billion.
In the Kolkata arms dropping case, 4 Russians and 1 British were detained and because of the good relations between Russia and India, India released those 4 prisoners to Russia such that they can be trialed their.
In the 71 war between India and Pakistan, Russia(Soviet Union) vetoed the resolution of attack against India, introduced and supported by USA and China in security council.
Rakesh Sharma was the first Indian in space and was taken to space in a Soviet spaceship.
Russia supports India's claim of permenant seat in security council.
Soviet Union supported India's freedom struggle against the British empire.
Russia does influence India because Russia has always helped India and are very good friends.

I don't doubt that Russia has been a good friend to your country, my question is that of how much influence it has over it and other countries. For example, on the issue of a Security Council seat for India. Britain, France and Russia all support it in principle. The US is undecided and China opposes it. So if Russia has influence over China why has it not used this influence to change China's stance on the issue? Freindly relations are very different to being in a possition to exert influence which is generally getting countries to do what you want them to do by changing their policy on an issue.

Well, that's rather catch all. They are rather a joke at the G8 to be fair so I think we can safely discount economic influence.

    I wouldn't say so.

Their conventional armed forces are demoralised, under fed, undisciplined and using shoddy equipment.

What they show on British television and the reality are two different things.

Their nukes are incredibly expensive to maintain, and they have far more than they need which further drains their economy and as a means of exerting influence nukes that you're not going to use are no good.

Leave the above to the likes of the history channel.

Their government is widely seen as incredibly corrupt, ranked alongside Zimbabwe in the bottom 30% of Transparency Internationals Corruption Perceptions index and the perception is based on reality - Russian politics and business are deeply corrupt.

I recommend you watch less movies as well. I can put out some economic data and growth factors that prove you completely wrong.

Organised crime is out of control and is a major factor in Western reluctance to invest in their economy.

Again - if popular movie media is your source of incredible information.... then I rest my case.

So having discounted economic, moral, military and nuclear influence, what exactly are Russia exerting influence with?

Actually you haven't provided evidence for anything you said above. Russia is the second strongest country military, it's a nuclear power, it is growing economically, and enjoys huge political influence especially with its neighbors and the United States. I can tell you that the distance from Paris to Washington is a bit longer than that from Moscow to Washington.

"If Russia says jump, the rest of the world says...."

The rest of the world says nothing - just like it cannot say anything to the United States.

I'm quite confident that the majority of people would not complete this sentance with "how high?". Indeed, the more popular endings would probably be unprintable.

Apparently if Britain or rather EU says "lets jump" the rest of the world says - "Go back to UN."

I'm not having a dig at Russians,

You simply don't know what you are talking about. But that's okay, many people don't.

they have done reasonably well in the face of major change in their country, but the idea that they exert any high degree of influence these days is not credible.

My dear friend Russia is one of the few nations in the world that has a 100% independent foreign policy doctirne something that only a very select number of countries enjoy. And no, Britain is not part of this special club; neither is France, nor Germany. The only other countries are US, China, and may be - may be India.

With all due respect, you've done absolutely nothing to counter the knowledgeable commentary presented by Britishchap, other than to offer snide dismissals.

Have you any supporting material to illustrate your claims?
