    Who Supports Israel?

    WHO SUPPORTS ISRAEL?

    By DANIEL PIPES

September 3, 2003 -- 'I HAVE developed a habit," writes Richard Ingrams, a columnist for The Guardian, a far-left British newspaper, "when confronted by letters to the editor in support of the Israeli government to look at the signature to see if the writer has a Jewish name. If so, I tend not to read it."
This shameful passage raised a small storm in Britiain over anti-Semitism. But what about Ingrams' assumption that Jews uniformly support the Sharon government?

At first glance, this might seem accurate. Israeli Jews voted Ariel Sharon into power and the leading diaspora Jewish organizations generally take their cues from Jerusalem. But a closer look reveals the assumption to be nonsense, as Jews are among Sharon's (and Israel's) most vocal critics.

The academic campaign to delegitimize Israel presents a striking example of this, for Jewish faculty have lead the effort. Noam Chomsky started and other Jews picked up the pressure on U.S. university administrators to withdraw investments from Israel. In Britain, Steven and Hilary Rose initiated an academic boycott against Israel; John Docker had a similar role in Australia. Among Middle East specialists, Joel Beinin, Ian Lustick and Avi Shlaim lead the anti-Sharon charge.

Authors such as Norman Finkelstein, Thomas Friedman, Michael Lerner, Arthur Miller and Susan Sontag are outspoken critics. Lawyer Stanley Cohen specializes in representing the enemies of Israel. British MP Oona King states that "in escaping the ashes of the Holocaust, [Israelis] have incarcerated another people in a hell similar in its nature - although not its extent - to the Warsaw ghetto." The president of the World Jewish Congress, Edgar Bronfman, clashes publicly with the Sharon government. One compilation lists 65 predominantly Jewish or Israeli anti-Sharon groups.

In short, Jews - especially Jewish intellectuals - do not uniformly support Sharon.

There is, however, another group that does predictably support Israel: conservatives. No less predictably, the Left opposes Israel. While there are plenty of exceptions, this pattern has wide validity. Some examples:

    * A conservative like U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay speaks of the "common destiny of the United States and Israel" and the "heartfelt friendship between the citizens of two democracies at war, bound by the solidarity of freedom." In contrast, a far-leftist like the writer Kirkpatrick Sale considers the idea of a Jewish state "a mistake" and says the time has come "to ask whether the 50-year-old experiment known as the state of Israel has proven to be a failure and should be abandoned."

    * Britain's Labor prime minister, Tony Blair, hosted a conference in early 2003 on the Arab-Israeli conflict and did not bother to invite Israelis; he also ostentatiously snubbed Israel's foreign minister. In reply, Conservative Party leader Iain Duncan Smith criticized Blair for "fiddling with pointless conferences while suicide bombers are malignantly burning their way through Israel" and he berated Blair for "giving support" to Yasser Arafat while refusing to see the Israeli foreign minister.

    * It was primarily conservatives in the European Parliament who pushed for a parliamentary committee of inquiry into the possible misuse of the European Union's monthly 10 million euro stipend to the Palestinian Authority for support of terrorism.

Ethnicity and religion certainly play a role in shaping attitudes but ideas matter more. One telling symbol of this was in 1998, when The Nation magazine called on a leftist Jew (Andrew N. Rubin) to savage a book by a conservative Muslim (Fouad Ajami) for being too friendly to Israel.

In many other countries, notes Charlotte West, Israel also finds its most solid support among conservatives; Australia, Canada, France, Italy come to mind.

This is new. Twenty years ago, liberal or conservative outlooks had little bearing on one's views of Israel or other Middle East issues. During the Cold War, Middle Eastern problems stood largely outside the great debate of that era - policy toward the Soviet Union - so views of the Arab-Israeli conflict, Iraq, militant Islam and other topics were formed in isolation from larger principles.

Today, all that has changed. The Middle East has replaced the Soviet Union as the touchstone of politics and ideology. With increasing clarity, conservatives stand on one side of its issues and liberals on the other.

    True Americans Support Israel

    True Americans Support Israel
This will be my very first post and I am honored to be here. For many years I have wanted to find a way to tell Israel, and in particular the Jewish people, that there are multitudes in America who are truly your friends- no matter what our politicians or our policies may say to the world, nomatter if the whole rest of the world were to declare openly that they hate you and we only were left to stand with you against them, we are and always shall be your friends.
Notice I said "True Americans" support Israel. Not everyone here in the USA is a true American. As set down by our forefathers at the founding of this nation, only those who believe in God can be defined as American. I do not know the exact sources to point you to for that information, it is simply part of the history I was taught while growing up and I know it to be true.
Our nation was built upon the principles and laws and rights set down by God, and as far as I know we are the only two nations who can say that. While most Americans, including myself, do not know all the intricacies of Israels laws and traditions the very fact that the God we worship is your God, the only true and living God, binds our hearts to you as blood ties.
I've heard it said that there are Jews and Israeli's who call us fools for our love for you- so be it. If we are deceived and have no part at all in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, then thank Him for our foolishness, for it has made us your truest friends.
My Grandfather passed away not long ago and one of his dearest dreams was to visit Israel, I pray God let him see it when he left this world. I intend to visit Israel in his stead one day that I may deliver in person the blessings he so desired to bless you with himself. And I will come to Israel knowing I would be a target of terrorists, and without fear of them, for if I were to die there I would rest in peace in the homeland of my heart.
I am a 37 year old woman from the southern part of the USA and everyone I have ever known from here feels the same affection for you that I do. So please know that we are your friends and you do not stand alone against your enemies. God bless Israel, and I pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

But why is it that all over the world, it has become a pre-requisite for all liberal or leftists to be pro-pal? I mean im a liberal when it comes to domestic and European issues. As for Israel, i'm fairly centre-right. I attribute this to the fact that i know much more about the history of the conflict than the average Guardian reader.

30 years ago Israel was praised by socialists

Dude - it's not about Israel. It's about America that everyone complains. Israel is an extension of that America and all from the weak French to reveging Saudi Arabia to altruistic Denmark see it exactly in that fashion.

    Indians Support Israel

When Jerusalem was sacked over 2000 years ago, it was India that welcomed the Jews. Today, India and Indians worldwide support Israel.

And Pakistan is complaining about the relationship between Israel and India and Sharon's visit. Something is definitely going in the right direction for India and Israel if Pakistan is not happy.

What is Turkey's relationship with Israel and how did it come about? I just find it hard to believe that a Muslim country could have Israel as its ally.

Turkey is a Muslim country, but with a secular gov't.
The Turks are not Arabs, but a different ethnic identity (same as Iranians are not Arabs). You can roughly say the Arabs speak Arabic, while non Arabs speak other languages (there are minor exceptions).
Both Turks and Iranians look at Arabs with contempt and regard them as inferior.

Since the fall of the Ottoman empire in WWI and the establishment modern Turkey, it has aspired to join the European nations. As such, Turkey has always regarded itself as outside the middle east and outside its “internal” affairs and conflicts. Turkey adopted a pragmatic approach to the state of Israel, and recognized the advantages of dealing and trading with Israel. Despite occasional antagonism from local population, this approach was maintained ever since the establishment of the state of Israel.

As to Turkish official position in regard to the Israeli Arab conflict, it is usually a neutral stance. This is evident from its habit to abstain in UN votes concerning the issue.

We can say Turkey is indeed a friend of Israel, albeit not as truthful and dedicated as the US.

I'd like to add few comments to the above post.

Israel has better relationship with the Turkish Army then the Turkish goverment.

Europe holds some contempt to Turky, both because of Arab influance, aspecialy in regareds to the Kurds, and historical cultural enimocity. Britain and Australia fought Turky in two fronts, and lost in one, during WWI. Still an open wounds, historicly speaking. Europe resist selling arms to turky. Israel is willing to sell arms to turky and to upgrade old military equipment.

Last, but most important: Syria. Syria is a terror supporting ragime which helps terror organizaions world wide. Partly as a source of finance and instrument of narcotics distribution into Europe. Syria, is an offical enemy of Israel, (we are in a state of siese fire). and "unofficial" enemy of Turky, through syria's support of pro Iranian and Kurd terror groups who operate against turky.

Haim Revivo. Israeli football talent who played in Turky for many years and was considered there, as the best player they had at the time. Was recognized as an "Israeli ambasador of good will" in Turky. The turkish masses loved him.

Relative to Europe, turky has less anti semetism. Aspecialy, since WWI. Jews lived in Turky for thousands of years, relativly, undisturbed. Turky took neutral approach during WWII. Some Romanian Jews were allowed to escape through turkish territory to land of Israel.

All Israelis like turkish foods, and aspecialy, turkish sweats: Rahat lokum, Halva, Baklawa... are resident in every house.

tenth of thousands of Israelis vacation in Turky every year.

During the 1999 earth quaqe in Turky, Israel was the first to offer REAL help and probably the largest rescue mission any other country ever sent. We sent a whole hospital, tents, tempral housings, food, clothes and blankets contributed by ordinary Israelis, collected in every streat corner of main cities... I hope the turks wont forget that.

Both Turks and Israelis hate Germans for very good reasons.

    Aren't you witty.

India, Turkey and America are Israel's main allies. What do all three have in common? They are all secular governments that have been challenged by and are being challenged by Arab and Islamic terrorism (the two are not quite yet mutually exclusive). Countries that know from experience what Israel is going through support Israel far more than countries that do not. Italy is another example. Russia should be, but Russian nationalism = hatred of the Jews = at best a neutral Russian stance towards Israel. Since nationalism is the main force in Russia at the moment, well, there you have it. Russia is also desperately trying to get into the EU, and adopting the EU's stance toward Israel can't hurt.

very true jews in India are well repected bu most of the population. recently in Seattle the Anne Frank Center USA and The Sikh Foundation had fund raiser to celebrate both communitties. In Canada sikhs have given thosands of dollars towards a national human rights museum in Winnipeg containing a galleries dedicated to the Holocaust and to modeled in part on the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington. Israel may have few friend, but they are true freinds.

On a side note, i just came back from India three days ago. WOW so much has changed in the last few years. quite a bit less corrupt then my last visit. alsp there was much more nationalism than extreamism, i was quite impressed.
