I'm not so quick to negatively judge Bush, Powell and Rice as unmitigated failures. As the President has said repeatedly, this is a different kind of war that may last a long time, and will certainly use subterfuges and ploys as strategy against terrorists. For example I think his speech last night was directed more at Islamists than the American people. This is why he called Iraq the central front in the war, in order to draw the otherwise elusive terrorists to Iraq where they will be easier to hunt and kill. In a similar vein he has said that Islam is peace, with the unstated implication 'or else'. If this is the case and Bush and his advisors are using mind games as part of the overall strategy, it follows that his critics in the US and elsewhere are the clueless ones, not the President. Patience is needed- Rome was not built in a day, and the world will not be re-built without terrorism in a year or two.
